Trilution (Por)

* ZVC Indoor Gent (Bel) won 2-0 on penalties.

The second final of the day would see ZVC Indoor Gent versus Trilution. With the equivalent* of seven games of football already under their belt the two teams would need to summon one last burst of energy to ensure they would be picking up winners and not runners-up medals in the presentation.

* Trilution played one game less in the group phase but the games were longer to compensate so the amount of football played was the same.

As we did with the Trophy Final, let's have a look at the form guide:

ZVC Indoor Gent

Trilution FC

Unbeaten run: 2 games

Previous honours: 2016 Algarve Open Plate Winners

The stage was set, let's get the action underway.

ZVC Indoor Gent had looked like Plate champions elect since this knock-out competition began but this was certainly their most difficult obstacle yet. Not just because it was the Plate Final and you'd expect the strongest team to reach the final but also because Trilution FC had won the Plate here before in 2016.

It did not seem to worry ZVC Indoor Gent though as they continued along their steady path to victory. Michael Ingels fourth strike of the tournament game them a 1-0 lead.

They kicked off the second half still 1-0 up and must have been confident. They had not conceded in almost 4 games of football but Trilution FC had a potent attack. Nuno Pines had 7 goals today and Paulo Marta had 3 goals in the knock-out phase. These were the two danger men. Paulo Marta was the man who scored to pull Trilution back level, 1-1. It was a late equalizer and we would need a penalty shoot-out to decide this.

Penalties would be interesting. ZVC have been involved in two eurofootballfives.com penalty shoot-outs and won them both. Trilution have been involved in one and lost. Did ZVC have the psychological advantage?

Trilution would take the first penalty. It was Nuno Pines versus David Van Der Borcht. The Trilution number 13 went for power to the left hand side, Van Der Borcht went to his right and pulled off a stunning save. Michael Ingels would take on Fabio in goal for Trilution. The goalkeeper was quickly off his line but Ingels put the ball in the top left corner for 1-0.

Paulo Marta got the important goal in normal time and he was to take the next penalty. David Van Der Borcht went to his right again and made another excellent save. ZVC Indoor Gent could sense glory. Next penalty was Josse Vekeman for ZVC. Fabio was off his line again but Vekeman slotted it underneath the goalkeeper to win the title and spark wild celebrations amongst his team.

For Trilution it was penalty heartbreak for the second year in a row. We congratulate them for a great day's performance and commiserations for just missing out on those winners medals.

We offer our huge congratulations to our 2019 Algarve Open Tournament Plate champions though – ZVC Indoor Gent – with a special mention to retiring goalkeeping hero, David Van Der Borcht.
