Welcome to the Algarve! The stage was set for our thirteenth Algarve tournament and eurofootballfives 107th tournament in Europe. We had 23 teams assembled for a great day of competition. Belgium, England and Portugal were all represented in the tournament draw.

We couldn't wait to get started and the teams were eager to get the action underway on pitch A. We had two teams who were regulars at our tournaments and familiar with each other having played at the 2017 Amsterdam Fives. It was ZVC Indoor Gent versus Purnell Youth. When these two teams met in the Netherlands it was ZVC Indoor Gent who emerged victorious 2-1.

Tom Cook scored for Purnell Youth in that 2017 game and he was on target here in 2019 as Purnell Youth took a 1-0 lead which they held until half-time. Michael Ingels was a 2-goal hero for ZVC Indoor Gent last time out and he was in the squad today. However, it was a debutant in eurofootballfives.com competition, Josse Vekeman who was on target for the Belgian team.

The match finished 1-1 and it was a solid start for both teams.

The first phase of the 2019 Algarve Open would be decided on a group basis. Each team would play each other team in their group once. After which, depending on position, they would progress to the Cup, Plate or Trophy competition.

The teams finishing 1st and 2nd in each group would progress to the Cup competition. The teams finishing 3rd and 4th in each group would progress to the Plate competition and the teams finishing 5th and 6th would progress to the Trophy competition. Each would be played as a knock-out phase with Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Final.

We continued in Group A with Mini FC versus Southgate County 1s – more on each of them later. On the field of play it was an English team who hit the front for the second successive game. This time it was Neil Spackman with the goal for Southgate County.

The Portuguese were level before the break though as Joao Simoes made it 1-1. In the second half Carvalho struck a second for Mini FC which proved to be the winner.

The final fixture in the opening round of Group A was Tysers (Eng) versus ACD.Sta.C.a.Nova (Por).

Tysers were making their third eurofootballfives.com appearance and their second in Portugal having played at the 2018 Lisbon Tournament. They featured in a tough group which saw the 2017 Lisbon Tournament and 2017 Amsterdam Fives winners only finish in third and fourth place. They finished in sixth position and qualified for the Trophy competition. Their form changed in the knock-out stage with a 4-1 Quarter-Final win over FC Broxelona B. It continued in the Semi-Final with a 2-0 win over Giggs Boson FC. The Trophy Final saw a 1-1 draw with Trinacria A which was then decided on penalties. It was the Belgians who emerged victorious, 3-1.

It looked like this form may well be continuing onto the Algarve stage as Greg Bowles drew first blood for Tysers. For the third game running an English team took the lead and for the third game running an English team were unable to retain the lead.

Two second half goals for ACD.Sta.C.a.Nova turned this game around. Jose Ramos was the man to restore parity before Goncarlo Rodrigues put the Portuguese ahead. Final score, 2-1.
