The
2012 Mallorca Tournament had proven to be, arguably,
our highest quality tournament ever and so the
8 teams who had qualified for the Cup competition
had certainly earned their places. One previous
winner had missed out but there was still 4 past
winners in the Quarter-Final draw (Policia Mallorca,
Goldsmith Williams, FC Radbroke, Inter Women),
the best team not to win a eurofootballfives.com
tournament (Cheesecake FC) and 3 Spanish teams
who had won their groups (Di Stefano Peluguira,
Sportsman Bar, Cosegur Balear). It would be a
brave person to pick the winners. All 8 teams
were perfectly capable of taking glory.
The
first teams to do battle were Di Stefano Peluguira
and Goldsmith Williams. The former were on debut
and had made quite a mark on Group A winning the
group with 4 wins and 1 draw. They also claimed
the best goal difference of all 18 teams in the
group phase with a +16 record. Goldsmith Williams
were no strangers to this stage of a eurofootballfives.com
tournament;
2009
Barca Fives: 7-0 versus Arrows.
2009
Prague Masters: 6-1 versus DHL Prague Blue.
2011
Algarve Open: 3-0 versus Mysterious Dwarves.
They
were bidding to make their 6th Cup Semi-Final
in succession (2 tournaments they qualified direct
for the Cup Semi-Finals from the Group Phase)
but Di Stefano Peluguira had other ideas.
The
Spanish were in fine form and established a 2-0
lead in the first half when Raul Toro Hidalgo
and Juan Jose Soria Lizana found the net. In the
second half Goldsmith Williams were reduced to
4-men when last defender Craig Ralph scythed down
a Di Stefano forward as he charged towards goal
on the break and the game was effectively over
from that moment on. Di Stefano in the end ran
out 4-0 winners and, we're sad to say, Goldsmith
Williams were out. The second of the five previous
winners to crash out.
