The 2012 Mallorca Tournament had proven to be, arguably, our highest quality tournament ever and so the 8 teams who had qualified for the Cup competition had certainly earned their places. One previous winner had missed out but there was still 4 past winners in the Quarter-Final draw (Policia Mallorca, Goldsmith Williams, FC Radbroke, Inter Women), the best team not to win a eurofootballfives.com tournament (Cheesecake FC) and 3 Spanish teams who had won their groups (Di Stefano Peluguira, Sportsman Bar, Cosegur Balear). It would be a brave person to pick the winners. All 8 teams were perfectly capable of taking glory.

The first teams to do battle were Di Stefano Peluguira and Goldsmith Williams. The former were on debut and had made quite a mark on Group A winning the group with 4 wins and 1 draw. They also claimed the best goal difference of all 18 teams in the group phase with a +16 record. Goldsmith Williams were no strangers to this stage of a eurofootballfives.com tournament;

2009 Barca Fives: 7-0 versus Arrows.

2009 Prague Masters: 6-1 versus DHL Prague Blue.

2011 Algarve Open: 3-0 versus Mysterious Dwarves.

They were bidding to make their 6th Cup Semi-Final in succession (2 tournaments they qualified direct for the Cup Semi-Finals from the Group Phase) but Di Stefano Peluguira had other ideas.

The Spanish were in fine form and established a 2-0 lead in the first half when Raul Toro Hidalgo and Juan Jose Soria Lizana found the net. In the second half Goldsmith Williams were reduced to 4-men when last defender Craig Ralph scythed down a Di Stefano forward as he charged towards goal on the break and the game was effectively over from that moment on. Di Stefano in the end ran out 4-0 winners and, we're sad to say, Goldsmith Williams were out. The second of the five previous winners to crash out.

The second Quarter-Final was a match-up between Sportsman Bar and Policia Mallorca. The two teams had qualified as the Winners of Group B (in the case of Sportsman Bar) and the 2nd best 3rd placed team (in the case of Policia Mallorca). In a quirk of fate this meant both teams had come from Group B and therefore already met today. The first game had proven to be pretty close one with the Sportsman Bar edging it 1-0. A repeat would be just perfect for them.

The first half was looking as if it would be just as close and we reached half-time all square at 0-0. In the second half it was a famous name grabbing the headlines as Charlie Sheen scored twice for the Sportsman Bar to seal a 2-0 victory. It was a great double for them against last year's winners. To beat the defending champions once is one thing but to defeat them twice is a great achievement.

The defeat meant that 3 of the 5 previous eurofootballfives.com tournament winners had now fallen such was the quality of teams in this event. Sportsman Bar marched on to the Semi-Finals and were very much a team to watch.

The third Quarter-Final saw Group C winners Cosegur Balear take on the Runners-Up of Group B, FC Radbroke. Cosegur Balear were on debut and making great progress so far – they won Group C and boasted the only 100% record in the tournament with 5 wins out of 5 and were yet to concede a goal. They would provide formidable opposition for FC Radbroke.

FC Radbroke were at this stage for the fourth time and although they'd lost their first Cup Quarter-Final they had since won two out of two. Their record reads;

2009 Barca Fives: Lost 3-2 Lozenetz City

2010 Valencia Fives: Won 6-1 versus Plantaciones Inside

2011 Prague Masters: Won 3-2 versus Kehar Club

On today's showing they were playing well enough to make it another win as they'd already defeated the defending champions but had suffered a narrow loss to Sportsman Bar.

The Spanish team, Cosegur Balear, were in rampant form though and put FC Radbroke to the sword and inflicted FC Radbroke's heaviest defeat in eurofootballfives.com competition (previously 4-2 to 2010 Valencia Fives champions Futbol City). Cosegur Balear led 3-0 by half-time and it was 5-0 by full time.

The result meant the 4th of our 5 previous winners had gone. Cosegur Balear could well be this year's winners.

The final Quarter-Final was Inter Women versus Cheesecake FC. Inter Women came into the game unbeaten and missed out on the Group A title on goal difference. Cheesecake FC had battled hard to reach this stage with 3 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat. We witnessed one of the games of the tournament.

Inter Women opened up a 2-1 lead at half-time with Justin Rees' goal for Cheesecake FC keeping them in it. Inter Women then went 3-1 up but Cheesecake FC reduced the deficit to 3-2 almost immediately through Luc Osborne. As the game was reaching its conclusion Wes Armstrong struck the game's 6th goal to pull them level at 3-3. Inter Women's goals came from Dave Foran and two from Daniel Powell taking him to 8 goals for the competition. The result was that we would need a penalty shoot-out to decide this Quarter-Final.

It was Inter Women to strike first in the shoot-out and they took the early initiative to make it 1-0 before Cheesecake FC quickly leveled things up. Then, a pivotal moment as Inter Women failed to convert their second kick whilst Luc Osborne took full advantage to put Cheesecake FC to go 2-1 up. The third penalty from Inter Women was saved and with it they were out. Cheesecake FC were through in their search for a first eurofootballfives.com win.

We said above it would be a brave person to pick the winners of this tournament – we had a sneaking suspicion it would be Inter Women and sorry to them if we jinxed them. Inter Women actually went out without losing a game which is a pretty tough pill to swallow – in fact their overall eurofootballfives.com record reads 10 wins, 4 draws, 0 defeats. With Inter Women falling all the 5 past winners had now exited the tournament so we would have a brand new eurofootballfives.com winner today.
