We were at the 2019 Mallorca Fives Cup Semi-Final stage and from the 19 teams who signed up we were down to the final 4 – already an achievement for those who were still in the hunt for glory. We had four different nations represented – Ecuador, England, Portugal and Spain. The first Cup Semi-Final would see Deddington Sea Men versus Bar Maruru.

If we can borrow some text from the Plate Semi-Finals, this would be Deddington's fifth semi-final in our tournaments and their second in the Cup competition. Their record read:

2017 Krakow Trophy (Plate): Deddington Sea Eagles beat Trinacria (Bel) 4-1.

2017 Krakow Trophy (Plate): Deddington Sea Otters lost to Fylde FC A (Eng) 1-7.

2018 Riga Tournament (Cup): Deddington Sea Badgers drew 1-1 with RFT (Lat). Won 2-0 on penalties.

2019 Mallorca Fives (Plate): Deddington Sea Rats lost to GHSFC (Eng) 2-3.

This game was between the 2018 Mallorca Tournament and 2018 Riga Tournament winners. They had already played before today back in Group B and played out a 2-2 draw. Deddington had lead 2-0 before being pegged back.

It was Bar Maruru who took the lead here thanks to a strike from Juan Jose Vanrell. Deddington Sea Men did the equalizing this time thanks to Mark Cook's fourth goal of the day. The two teams were level at half-time.

It took a wonder goal in the second half to split the two teams. A Farid Echanghoufi back-heel put Bar Maruru 2-1 up. He then made it 3-1 as Bar Maruru's hopes of another title remained.

So, who would take their place in the Final from the second Semi-Final? The two teams set to do battle were Hellgarve Kraken's (Por) against Ecuador 100% (Ecu).

Hellgarve Kraken's were bidding to join the list of multiple Cup winners in our tournaments. 17 teams in eurofootballfives.com history had won 2 or more titles. If Hellgarve Kraken's could go all the way today they would join that list.

Ecuador 100% were trying to win their first title at the 8th attempt. After many of their early appearances had been in the Plate competition they had recently appeared in two Cup Finals – losing in May 2017 to Wilmslow Whoppers and September 2018 to Bar Maruru.

Ecuador 100% were looking like a different beast to day and were our top scorers with 24 goals in 6 games! Hugely impressive. Hellgarve Kraken's success had been built on defence with just two goals conceded in their 7 games so far.

Jose Mosquera turned the Quarter-Final around for Ecuador 100% and he opened the scoring here with the only goal of the first half. In the second period Hugo Dias scored a stunner. On the turn he thumped a goal into the bottom corner from distance and Hellgarve Kraken's were level at 1-1.

It looked like we would be destined for a draw but two late goals changed that. Andres Dorado really made a name for himself with 2 goals within a couple of minutes and a game that was heading for penalties, in a flash, turned into a 3-1 win for Ecuador 100%

It was disappointment for Hellgarve Kraken's but we look forward to seeing them at next month's Algarve Open on home soil.
