It was Cup Final time in Spain. After 64 games of football we came down to the most important of them all. Game 65, the match that would determine the 2019 Mallorca Fives champions.

This game was a repeat of the 2018 Mallorca Tournament Cup Final which Bar Maruru won convincingly, 5-0. A repeat would see Bar Maruru only become the second team to retain a eurofootballfives.com title - Athletico Do Hollande have succeeded with the 2010 and 2011 Algarve Open titles.

Other than Athletico Do Hollande, 5 teams looking to defend a title had made it to the final the following year (with many more falling before the Cup Final). None of them had won:

Goldsmith Williams (Eng) – 2008 Prague Masters Champions. Lost 2009 final to Lozenetz City (Bul)

Lozenetz City (Bul) – 2009 Prague Masters Champions. Lost 2010 final to Olympic Phil Babb (Eng)

Deportivo (Cze) – 2010 Prague Trophy winners. Lost 2011 final to FC Radbroke (Eng).

Los Swallacticos (Nir) – 2013 Barcelona Fives champions. Lost 2014 final to Monexy (Ukr)

CIS Committee (Blr) – 2014 Budapest Fives champions. Lost 2015 final to Csabagyongye (Hun)

The game itself was played with a great atmosphere as the other teams all assembled pitch-side to watch the show-piece game of the day. They witnessed a stellar performance from Ecuador 100% who raced into an early 3-0 lead. Alfredo Mieles, Jon and Andres Dorado all scored. Bar Maruru hardly had time to draw breath. As they regrouped and tried to get a goal back they fell further behind to Andrew Dorado's second of the game for 4-0. It was only half-time.

There was no way back for Bar Maruru after the break as Ecuador 100% only increased their lead thanks to two more from Jon who completed his hat-trick and a 6-0 win!

Had the curse struck again? We don't think so. Bar Maruru just encountered a very good Ecuador 100% team who struck early to take the game away from their opponents. We offer our sincere commiserations to them.

Our congratulations go to Ecuador 100% on their first eurofootballfives.com victory! They had certainly worked hard for it on their 8th appearance at our tournament and recovering from 2 previous defeats in Cup Finals. It was great to see their perseverance rewarded. Could they retain the title in 2020? Only time would tell!
