The
2014 Amsterdam Fives Wooden Spoon Final was the
battle for 17th position, a consolation prize
and one last game to enjoy at the Amsterdam Fives.
The
game would be contested by Wilhelmus and Playing
Against Cancer FC. Playing Against Cancer FC came
into the game as the 17th ranked team courtesy
of their 2-2 draw with Bede FC. Wilhelmus were
ranked 18th as they failed to pick up a point
in the group phase although their goal difference
of -16 compared to their opponents -19 was something
in their favour. Wilhelmus could also take some
solace from the fact that they arguably progressed
from the Group of Death in today's tournament.
The
teams would have to summon up one last ounce of
effort to finish the day on a high, with a victory
and the coveted Wooden Spoon to take home.
We
reached half-time with Wilhelmus having taken
the plaudits from the opening period as Steve
Fehler got the ball rolling with his first of
the day and Tim Warrington's second of the tournament
giving them a good 2-0 lead to take into the turnaround.
After
the break the game became really open and there
was goals at both ends. Wilhelmus always had it
in their hands as they converted 2-0 at half-time
to 5-2 at full-time. Mike Swanson grabbed a goal,
as did Stuart Trutch before Steve Fehler completed
the scoring that he had begun. For Playing Against
Cancer FC there was a double for Jimmer Aker taking
his tournament tally to 4 goals – a great return
in a struggling side.
