Round 5 was the last chance for the teams in Group C to stake their claim for their chosen objectives. Return of the Dancing Horses III were first up with a chance to win the Group if they could just avoid defeat. Their opponents were also their nearest challengers in the table, ADP Netherlands.

ADP Netherlands needed a two goal win to join Return of the Dancing Horses III on 12 points and leapfrog them on goal difference to effectively claim the Group C title (St Paul's College Old Boys could still reach 12 points but their goal difference was much less). ADP Netherlands were looking over their shoulder a little bit though as a win for Melee FC in their last game could move into second above them. ADP Netherlands needed a draw to ensure second place and Cup qualification.

We touched on Return of the Dancing Horses III remarkable group record since 2012 and it was now 8 successive wins, 23 goals scored and just 1 conceded. The goals conceded column took a little bit of a hit in this game as Remco Nijland scored twice for ADP Netherlands but the “Goals For” column continued to tick over nicely as Craig Harrison (2), Liam Apicella and Matthew Spence ensured it was now 9 successive wins with a 4-2 win.

It meant Return of the Dancing Horses III had emerged from their last two group campaigns with 100% records and they would be a team to watch in the Cup competition this afternoon. ADP Netherlands would need to watch the last two games with interest to see how their fate would be decided.

Playing Against Cancer FC and Bede FC were already assured 5th and 6th positions in Group C but who would occupy which position at the end of this game. It was currently Bede FC who were in 5th due to the superior goal difference of the two so it meant Playing Against Cancer FC had to win whilst a draw or win would be good enough to take 5th place for Bede FC.

There was also the matter of Plate qualification – 5th place would mean a guaranteed place in the Plate. 6th place might also subject to results in other groups. The teams could only worry about their own performance though and it was Playing Against Cancer FC who made the early running. Jimmer Aker and Joran Veenman put the local team 2-0 up and at this stage it spelt trouble for Bede FC.

Rich Hollis reduced the deficit to 2-1 and then found the net for a second time to bring them back to 2-2. A winner (for either team) proved elusive and the teams shared the points in a Desmond (Tutu) draw.

It meant Bede FC would finish 5th and Playing Against Cancer FC would go through to the Wooden Spoon play-off as they had not done quite enough to finish as the best 6th placed team.

All that was left to wrap up Group C was Melee FC versus St Paul's College Old Boys. To their horror and above their pre-tournament expectations it seemed that St Paul's College Old Boys had a shot at Cup qualification. They currently sat on 9 points and in third position. A draw/victory would see them finish second.

A defeat for St Paul's College Old Boys would naturally mean a win for Melee FC and see Melee FC join their opponents and ADP Netherlands on 9 points. It would then come down to goal difference to see which of these three teams would qualify for the Cup. With Group A and Group B about to reach their conclusions it looked like 9 points would be enough to secure one of the two best 3rd placed finishes and qualify for the Cup. It would therefore be two from three of these teams. Of course, anything less than a win for Melee FC would see them into the Plate.

At the start of the tournament, it was unthinkable that Melee FC would miss out on the Cup after their strong showing in Barcelona but before this game started it was very much a possibility after two defeats. Once the game was underway their qualification was in little doubt as they stepped up their game to record a resounding 6-1 win.

At half-time it was 2-1 but after the break they eased away to victory with Kevin Lewis adding four goals to his tally for the day along with strikes for Chris Pilsbury and goalkeeper Fabio Zucchelli. Mark Chalmers scored the consolation for St Paul's College Old Boys.

The result meant that Melee FC would qualify for the Cup in second place behind Group C champions Return of the Dancing Horses III. ADP Netherlands would join them as one of the best 3rd placed teams.

The Group C representatives in the Plate competition would be St Paul's College Old Boys and Bede FC. Playing Against Cancer FC would play one more fixture in the Wooden Spoon game.
