With
59 games gone before, there was just one more
game left to decide the winners of the tournament
– the 2014 Amsterdam Fives Cup Final. The rosta
of previous winners reads;
2008:
Olympic Phil Babb
2009:
Bull Heads
2010:
Goldsmith Williams
2011:
Inter Women
2012:
CEPL
Would
it be Athletico Do Hollande or Melee FC added
to that list? We had a great final in store and
a fantastic crowd assembled by Pitch A and in
the beer garden overlooking the pitch. It was
a fantastic atmosphere for the two finalists to
play in.
Athletico
Do Hollande already had two eurofootballfives.com
wins under their belt (2010 and 2011 Algarve Open)
and had close in the past to winning here in Amsterdam
losing 4-1 in the 2011 Cup Final to Inter Women.
Could they manage a first home victory?
Melee
FC were in their second Cup Final. They would
have mixed memories of the 2013 Barcelona Fives
as they came so close before an injury to captain
Jack Dell and a late winner for Los Swallacticos
meant they had runners-up medals instead of a
winners' trophy to take home.
The
crucial moments in this Cup Final happened early
on as Athletico Do Hollande scored two early goals
through Owairan Cloenise and Giorgio Fraenk that
seemed to break the hearts and legs of Melee FC.
The English team looked a spent force under the
sweltering heat of the Amsterdam sun and the psychological
blow of having to recover from a two goal deficit
meant it looked like a game too far for Melee
FC.
Buoyed
by the lead, Athletico Do Hollande looked like
they could play all day and all night as they
relished in the occasion. The same pair of Owairan
Cloenise and Giorgio Fraenk added further goals
before Cloenise completed a hat-trick. In amongst
the first half flurry of Dutch goals there was
a moment to cheer for Melee FC as Chris Pilsbury
claimed his ninth of the day.
The
game and the tournament was won but Owuka Appiah
added two more for good measure in the second
half and completed a comprehensive 7-1 win.
Ladies
and gentlemen, we present you the 2014 Amsterdam
Fives winners – Athletico Do Hollande! They become
only the second team in eurofootballfives.com
history to win 3 tournaments (only 2008 Amsterdam
Fives winners Olympic Phil Babb have more with
a total haul of four tournaments).
We
send our commiserations to Melee FC who'd put
in a great effort today and despite great wins
over East Compton Eagles and Return of the Dancing
Horses III could not put the icing on the cake
in the Cup Final. Twice a bridesmaid and with
a bit of luck maybe the bride next time out.
The
personal honour of the day was won by Craig Harrison
of Return of the Dancing Horses III with 11 goals
in 7 games – a great achievement especially bearing
in mind it was his stag weekend!
We
send our congratulations to all the teams who
participated in what was a great day's competition.
It was our biggest and best tournament in Amsterdam
to date and we are truly grateful for your support.
