Round 5 began with our attentions at the foot of Group B and the battle for Plate qualification. RFM met Vodafone Netherlands in what was the teams' last chance to register points on the table. Vodafone Netherlands knew a win would secure 4th place, Plate qualification and a good draw in the Plate Quarter-Finals.

A draw would almost certainly see the same result unless Unathletico Madrid could manage a big win in their last game. A defeat would see Vodafone Netherlands slip to 5 th and possibly even 6 th if Unathletico Madrid also won.

For RFM they knew only a win would be good enough to finish 4th and they knew they only had to better Unathletico Madrid's result to secure a minimum of 5th. A defeat combined with any positive result for Unathletico Madrid would see them slip to 6th.

The teams certainly had incentive to finish in 4th place as, in theory, this would help them secure an easier Plate Quarter-Final tie so this was far from a dead tie. Ultimately though neither team could find a breakthrough in the opening period and we entered half-time level at 0-0.

After the break Vodafone Netherlands showed that extra quality needed to secure victory as Wouter Noe and Robert Geijsel (their goalscorers in their other victory) both found the net and they finished 2-0 victors. The result meant they would finish in 4th place on 6 points.

We now turned out attentions to the top of the table and what a fixture we had next. It was Team Extreme versus Damn Big Dogs. There was only 1 point separating the two teams with Team Extreme unbeaten on 10 points and Damn Big Dogs on a run of three successive victories to reach 9 points. This was going to be a tough one to call.

In terms of the context of the group, Team Extreme “only” needed a draw to secure Cup qualification and a win would almost certainly give them the Group B title due to their superior goal difference over their rivals. A defeat for Team Extreme may be good enough for 2 nd (if Big Dogs also lost) but more realistically meant 3rd place and they'd hope to be one of the two best third placed teams. 10 points should be enough for that but you never know.

Damn Big Dogs were in greater need of the win as it would seal Cup qualification and could win them the group (if Unathletico Madrid upset Big Dogs). A draw or defeat would more than likely need them hoping that their points tally was good enough to be one of the top two third placed teams for qualification.

On the pitch it was Team Extreme who struck first as Dean Tinney's fourth of the day put them in the ascendency. The second half kicked-off with Team Extreme retaining that goal advantage but not for long as Will Watkins scored for the third game in a row to equalize. The final word was left to Dave Cole though who put Team Extreme ahead again at 2-1 with what proved to be the winning goal.

The 2-1 win was virtually enough to win Group B….Team Extreme would have to wait for the final fixture to see if they had done enough. Damn Big Dogs fine run of results was over and they too would have to wait and see what their fate would be in the afternoon knock-out phase.

Into Game 15 of Group B and there was still much to decide. Big Dogs already knew they would finish in second position at worst but the league victory was up for grabs – a long shot but still possible. They had to win this game 9-0 or by a margin of 8 goals should UnAthletico Madrid score. Interestingly, if it finished 9-1 they and Team Extreme would finish with identical group records and, having drawn when they played each other, we would need a penalty shoot-out to decide the Group B winners. A scenario I'm sure most neutrals would love to see.

One team who would not want to see that was Unathletico Madrid and especially their goalkeeper! They still had their own fate to decide. A win or draw would see them finish 5th. A defeat would mean 6 th and then a look over to other group tables to see if they would be in the Plate or Wooden Spoon.

Big Dogs took no time at all in wrapping up the result and destiny of the points as Rikki Jones, Stephen Lawley and Tim East all scored in the opening period for a 3-0 half-time lead. It also just about kept alive the chances of Group B victory if Unathletico Madrid fell apart.

Unathletico Madrid did not fall apart though and actually got back into the game through Andrew Shaw – was the 9-1 on? No, there was to be no further addition to the score as Big Dogs ran out 3-1 victors and went into the Cup competition as Group B's second placed team.

Big Dogs would be joined in the Cup by Team Extreme and Damn Big Dogs (they had done enough to be one of the best third placed teams). Vodafone Netherlands, RFM and Unathletico Madrid would all qualify for the Plate as the point secured in the 0-0 draw by RFM versus Unathletico Madrid would see Unathletico Madrid qualify as the best sixth placed team.
