The Amsterdam Fives is back! After a brief hiatus in 2013 to allow other destinations into our calendar the Amsterdam Fives returned with a vengeance in 2014 in what was our largest event in the Dutch capital. It was our sixth tournament in Amsterdam since our debut in 2008.

The first two challengers to get us underway in Group A on Pitch A would be AAK S&S and Wilhelmus. AAK S&S were making a welcome return to Amsterdam and eurofootballfives.com action after competing at the event here in 2011. Back then they started off superbly with a 2-1 win over GBS Reds (Cze) and 3-2 over Goals Aloud (Wal). Results then tailed off but against quality opposition including Inter Women (2011 winners), Biale Orly then as CEPL (2012 winners) and Rigford Seahawks (2009 Krakow Trophy winners, 2012 Berlin Fives winners). They will hope for a kinder draw in this year's tournament.

AAK S&S got off to just as quick a start in 2014 as they did in 2011 with the first goal of the game scored by Gary Bartley and it was a goal that would give them the lead at half-time. After the turnaround they extended their lead from 1-0 to 3-0 with another goal from Bartley and Richard Clubley also finding the net.

Game 2 of Group A saw some familiar friends and faces in the form of East Compton Eagles and a team new to the eurofootballfives.com fold in Pajero FC.

East Compton Eagles have tasted eurofootballfives.com action on two previous occasions. They made their debut at our inaugural Berlin Fives tournament in 2012. They had two sides “Eagles” and “Seagulls”. The Eagles finished joint top (and level with the eventual Runners-Up) of their group and made the Cup Semi-Finals where they went out to the eventual winners, Rigford Seahawks. At the 2013 Mallorca Fives they had another successful group phase as they topped Group B ahead of 2012 Valencia Fives champions FC Miracle (Hun) and another team who will be here in Amsterdam this weekend - Team Extreme (Eng). East Compton Eagles run in Mallorca ended at the hands of two-times eurofootballfives.com winners Skidmarks in the Cup Semi-Finals. Can they go one step further and reach the Cup Final this year?

It certainly looked good for them early on against Pajero FC as they raced into a 3-0 first half lead with Richard Manns, Sean McCullough and Andy Cockrean all opening their personal account. Sean McCullough added a second to his after the break as the game became a more even contest in the second half. Reece Morrell scored Pajero FC's first goal in Europe as the game ended 4-1.

The final two teams in Group A were Athletico Do Hollande and FC Copenbadly. The latter were making their debut so we waited in anticipation to see how they would get on.

Athletico Do Hollande would no doubt be one of the favourites for the tournament as they competed in their third Amsterdam Fives following two tours to Portugal and the Algarve Open. In the 2010 Algarve Open, they became the first Dutch team to win a eurofootballfives tournament and they then became the first team to retain a title when they won the 2011 Algarve Open despite a very strong field that contained no less than 5 previous winners. In Amsterdam 2012 they fell at the final hurdle 4-1 to Inter Women. In 2012 there was a Cup Semi-Final exit against CEPL (now Biale Orly). Could they claim their first home title in 2014?

It looked a really tough opening game for FC Copenbadly and so it proved as Owairan Cloenise, Giorgio Fraenk and Guillermo Richards all scored for the Dutch team who recorded a 3-0 victory.
