The afternoon knock-out phase of the 2014 Amsterdam Fives began with the Plate Quarter-Finals. First up was Pajero FC versus Unathletico Madrid on Pitch A. In theory, this game should be the most predictable of all the Quarter-Finals as it pitted the only 3rd placed team in the draw from the group phase against the only 6th placed team in the draw.

Pajero's reward for finishing third and compensation for not making the Cup competition was, we reiterate in theory, the easiest of the Quarter-Final ties. Although we could surmise this from the sidelines Pajero FC could not take their opposition lightly on the pitch.

In the first period Unathletico Madrid were certainly able to compete with their opposition but were unable to prevent Pajero FC from taking a 1-0 lead into half time thanks to Reece Morrell. After the break Pajero FC moved up through the gears as Liam Spencer and Rob Jones (2) helped them to a 4-1 win and secure their passage to the Semi-Finals.

The second quarter-final was due to be FC Copenbadly versus RFM. RFM had suffered a number of injuries during the morning session and were left with just 3 standing players so were forced to withdraw from the competition. FC Copenbadly would need to wait a little longer for their first taste of knock-out football today.

Quarter-Final 3 would be contested by Vodafone Netherlands and Bede FC.

Vodafone Netherlands had to be considered the favourites going into the game having finished 4th in their group compared to the 5th position of Bede FC. Vodafone Netherlands also had 6 points and two wins so far today compared to the 1 point and 1 draw for Bede FC.

Vodafone Netherlands were looking to follow in the footsteps of Vodafone FC (Eng) who won the 2010 Algarve Open Plate. They started off well with Mark de Vries putting them ahead in the opening period and Robert Geijsel doubling the lead before the half-time.

In the second half Wouter Noe and Joechem added to the tally for Vodafone Netherlands. Troy Grant scored his second of the day at the other end for Bede FC but it would be Bede FC's final goal of the day as they departed. It was great to see Bede FC again at our tournaments and they proved a great asset to the tournament not only on the pitch but their support on the touchlines after their exit and also great value (as always) at the post-tournament social.

The final Plate Quarter-Final would be contested by St Paul's College Old Boys and AAK S&S. It was fourth place in Group C versus AAK S&S. St Paul's College Old Boy's had a return of 9 points in the group phase which represented the highest points tally of all teams in the Plate competition so they would certainly be a team to watch.

AAK S&S had been here before having reached the Plate Quarter-Finals of the 2011 Amsterdam Fives. Back then they lost out, 5-0, to the eventual winners Rigford Seahawks Omega – a team who also won the 2009 Krakow Trophy and 2012 Berlin Fives. They would be hoping to advance at least one stage further this year.

It was advantage St Paul's College Old Boys after the early exchanges as Andrew Sprosen, David Nelson and James West put them in a commanding position. They lead 3-1 with Daniel Stork's goal keeping AAK S&S in the hunt.

The second half was an end to end affair and honours were shared with two goals each – James West and Lewis Howard for St Paul's College Old Boys, Gary Bartley and Richard Clubley for AAK S&S. It was a great game to watch with goals aplenty but it was St Paul's College Old Boys going through 5-3.
