After 25 games of football in the Veterans competition we only had one more to play - The 2014 Mallorca Tournament Veterans Cup Final.

What a Cup Final we had in prospect! We had two teams who had both excelled throughout the day and I don't think anyone could argue that they didn't deserve to be in the Final. We had four exceptional teams reach the Semi-Finals but now just two remained to fight it out.

The two teams;

The Blackouts: Played 5, won 4 and 1 draw today. They had scored 15 goals along the way and conceded just one.

Palmesanos: Played 5, won 3 and 2 draw today. They had scored 15 goals along the way and conceded just two.

As you can see there was really nothing in it – just 1 goal conceded between them. It is often the goal-scoring teams that catch the eye (and these teams averaged 3 goals per game) but it was the best two defences in the tournament that had reached the Cup Final. The two teams had history as they met in the Group Phase and played out a 0-0 draw.

Go on…..pick a winner! We dare you!

The game was underway and the two teams looked as evenly matched on the pitch as they did on paper and it was no surprise that when we reached half-time it was the third successive goalless half of football between these two teams.

For much of the second half it still remained 0-0 and it looked for all the world as if we would need penalties to split these two teams. However, that would not be necessary. In the end one goal settled matters late in the second half and that goal game from Javier Alodear – his fifth of the tournament. It was a match-winning goal, it was a tournament winning goal. It was a heartbreaking goal if you were following The Blackouts.

It seemed such a shame that a team had to lose. Yeah, yeah it's a cliché but it has rarely been more true as in this instance. The Blackouts can feel very unfortunate that they came away with Runners-Up medals instead of Winners medals. There was some consolation for Ronan Gilligan as he picked up the tournament top goalscorer award with his 8 goals in the campaign.

Palmesanos became the second team to claim glory at a eurofootballfives.com Veterans Tournament following the success of Sao Marcos in Lisbon last year. The Veterans Tournament rolls on to the Algarve in 2015 for the third edition and w e hope to see as many of you as possible in Portugal.
