Son Gual (Spa)

We began Round 4 with La Briocha versus Wrexham Rednecks. In the battle for the Group A title La Briocha had the opportunity to strike first and put points on the board before Son Gual would take to the pitch. A draw would see them top (for now at least) but a win was what they needed to put pressure on their main Group A rival.

Wrexham Rednecks had just secured their first win of the day and a very convincing one at that, 4-1, so would enter the field with renewed confidence and vigour. They competed every step of the way against the team who had a 4 point lead in the table over them. However, they were powerless to prevent Alexis Ferreyre score his second of the tournament to give La Briocha a 1-0 half-time lead.

The task at kick-off when 0-0 was tough for Wrexham Rednecks but the task at 1-0 down starting the second half was even tougher. This was especially true considering that Juanjo Robeta in the La Briocha goal was yet to be beaten today. A fourth consecutive clean sheet would wrap up the points for La Briocha.

Wrexham Rednecks did all they could to find an equaliser but were unable to breach the strong Spanish defence. They held things tight at the other end and it was a narrow 1-0 win for La Briocha. The three points is what the Spanish wanted and it was the three points that they got.

The above result meant that Centrale Paris and 2Goals1Cup could each claim 3rd position outright in Group A if they could take victory from this game. Both teams were sat on 3 points and the winner would move a lot closer to finishing 3rd and potential Cup qualification. A draw would leave the teams in joint 3rd but with work to do going into the final round of fixtures.

2Goals1Cup had gone loss-win-loss so far and so would like to show the same resilience to bouce back from defeat as they had done in Round 2. Their opponents, Centrale Paris, had just secured their first victory of the day and were looking to keep that momentum going as they hoped to surge up the table.

The first goal of the game rewarded the momentum as it was Bertrand Desmottes' third goal in two games that gave the French team a prized 1-0 lead. Centrale Paris had appeared to put their slow start to games behind them. They carried their lead into the half-time break.

In the second half there was to be no addition to the score as Centrale Paris kept their first clean sheet of the day to shut out the forwards of 2Goals1Cup and earn all 3 points. It was the team from the French capital who now had sole occupancy of third spot.

The only thing left to settle in Round 4 was the not-so-small matter of The Undatables versus Son Gual. The Undatables had started off the day superbly with a debut win but two defeats since had seen them slip down the table. The last thing they needed was a game against the hirtherto unbeaten Son Gual.

Son Gual had seen La Briocha take all 3 points and now it was their turn to see if they could do the same. If they could then both these teams would be through to the Cup competition with a game to spare. Any form of victory for Son Gual would see them top of the tree on goal difference.

The Spanish team started off in determined fashion and never looked back. From the moment Jose Luis Maita put them 1-0 up they were always in charge. Dani Chanes doubled the lead before Darius's fifth goal of the tournament made it 3-0 and it was still only half-time. After the break Son Gual showed no mercy as Nelson made it 4-0 and Darius struck to make it 5-0. His sixth of the tournament marking him as an early contender for the top goalscorer prize.

The win sent Son Gual back to the top whereas The Undatables were sinking to the foot of the table.
