2Goals1Cup (Eng)

The 5th annual Mallorca Tournament (and our 6th on this sunshine island) kicked off on the 13th June on another glorious day on this stunning island – 18 teams assembled from 6 proud nations. The sun was shining, the teams were ready…the big kick-off was upon us.

The first two challengers to get us underway in Group A on Pitch A this year would be Wrexham Rednecks (Wal) versus The Undatables (Eng).

Wrexham Rednecks had a tough debut at the 2014 Barcelona Fives in a very difficult group. The Plate and Trophy winners came from their group as did one of the Cup Semi-Finalists and the 2013 Cup Semi-Finalists. With the exception of one heavy defeat to Naranjitos of Spain they competed well in all their other games. An injury hit campaign curtailed their efforts and they had to withdraw at the end of the group phase. We hoped for better luck with fitness this year – our medical team was on standby!

They came through the first game unscathed in terms of injury against an Undatables team making their first start in eurofootballfives.com competition. At half time there was nothing to separate the sides at 0-0.

In the second half we were to witness a goal and it was Stacey Wilde of The Undatables who claimed it. It was a valuable goal that earned his team all 3 points in a 1-0 win.

Game 2 of Group A was Centrale Paris FC of France versus Son Gual of Spain.

Centrale Paris first competed on the eurofootballfives.com stage at the 2011 Budapest Fives where they made quite an impact with both their squads finishing second in their group behind strong local Hungarian teams. The Cup Quarter-Finals saw both squads go out with the A team losing 1-0 to Olympic Phil Babb (who had won all 4 tournaments they'd played in at that stage) and the B team losing 3-1 to Csabagyongye who were only seconds away from knocking Olympic Phil Babb out in the subsequent Cup Semi-Final. They followed this up by playing in the 2012 Algarve Open where their A team went all the way to the final but fell just short as they took the Runners-Up medals. In 2013 they were also to miss out by the narrowest of margins as CFC lost in the Cup Final to FC Radbroke. In 2014 they swapped the Portuguese sun for the Spanish sun and finished 2 nd in Group A to qualify for the Cup. They lost 2-1 to eventual winners Cheesecake FC in the Quarter-Finals.

It was a slow start for Centrale Paris in Mallorca today as they found themselves 2-0 down early on. Two goals for Darius of Son Gual put the home side on the way to victory. Centrale Paris improved as the game went on but the damage was already done.

The final two teams in Group A were La Briocha of Spain and 2Goals1Cup of England.

La Briocha made their debut at the 2014 Mallorca Tournament and lost 6-2 in their opening game but it was against the eventual winners Cheesecake FC. They followed this up with a 5-0 win over Taylor's Tigers before slipping to a 6-1 defeat to Universidad Palma. They finished on a high with a 1-0 win over Kazbar FC to finish 3rd in the group and qualify for the Plate. A 3-1 win over Son Gual (Spa) in the Quarter-Finals and a 4-0 win over The A Team (Fra) in the Semi-Finals saw them through to a debut final. They were victorious 3-1 over Athletic 8Minute Bilbao to collect the silverware.

This promised to be a tough opening test against a 2Goals1Cup side who had always performed well in our tournaments as part of the Scoregasm group. It was a test La Briocha passed with flying colours as a first half goal from Alexis Ferreyre and a second half goal from Cristiano Manuel Somoza de Ilano sealed the points. Final score, 2-0.
