We were at the 2015 Mallorca Tournament Cup Semi-Final stage and from 18 teams who started the day we were down to the final 4. Before the Quarter-Finals we had 5 nationalities vying for glory – this was now 3 with Belgium, Ireland and Spain (x2) still harbouring hopes of success!

Up first was Saipan FC versus Policia Local. Saipan FC came into the game brimming with confidence and unbeaten so far today with 4 wins and 2 draws. They were bidding to reach their second eurofootballfives.com final after the 2012 Barcelona Five showpiece game. Policia Local were bidding to reach the Mallorca Tournament Cup Final for the third time in 5 years and regain the title they won in 2011.

The two teams met in Group B and on that occasion Saipan FC won a tight and even contest 1-0 late on. We expected another close contest here but what we got was a fairly one side affair. Saipan FC raced into a 3-0 lead as Ignacio Mochales Cuesta scored twice and Saipan FC ever-present Beat Schiffhauer scored once.

This Semi-Final was now Saipan FC's to lose but there was no hint this would be the case. Ignacio Mochales Cuesta found the net on two further occasions to complete his second hat-trick of the day and put him on 13 goals for the tournament. The top goalscorer race was a two horse race between him and Juan Garcia of Seleccion Balear. Ignacio Mochales Cuesta was now ahead by 1 goal and the fact he was scoring his goals in the Cup as opposed to Garcia in the Plate was even more impressive.

It was a first Cup Semi-Final defeat for Policia Mallorca who seemed to do Quarter-Final or Final (until today) and it was their heaviest defeat in the 6 tournaments they had played. It was quite a scalp for Saipan FC – not just in who they beat but in the manner in which they did it. The Cup Final beckoned for the team representing Ireland.

So, who would take their place in the Final from the second Semi-Final? The two teams set to do battle were Pelugueria Mariano against ZVC Indoor Gent?

These two teams had reached this stage in very different fashions. Pelugueria Mariano had stormed into the Semi-Finals with a 5-0 win whilst ZVC Indoor Gent had a monumental tussle with La Briocha and reached the Semi-Finals courtesy of penalties. This promised to be an equally gripping and tight encounter for the Belgian team.

These two had met in Round 5 of Group C to decide who won the group with Pelugueria Mariano winning 1-0 then. A repeat would do the Spanish just fine, ZVC Indoor Gent would need to exact their revenge. With the game underway it was ZVC Indoor Gent who took the lead thanks to Robby Ysewyn's third goal of the tournament. The lead did not last long though as David Rivero Rigo's fourth goal of the tournament made it 1-1 at half-time. 1-1 at half-time became 1-1 at full-time and ZVC Indoor Gent would “enjoy” a second penalty shoot-out of the day.

Pelugueria Mariano would take the first penalty in the shoot-out….

0-0, It was disaster for Rafael Rivero Rigo who missed the target and it was advantage Belgium.

0-1, Antony Chimkovitch stepped up first for ZVC Indoor Gent as he had done in the Quarter-Final and, also as he did in the Quarter-Final, scored.

1-1, The pressure was now on David Rivero Rigo who had to score – he did. David Van Der Borght almost got his foot to it as he dived the other way but the ball found the net.

1-2, Kenneth Blancquaert made the walk to the penalty spot as it looked like ZVC Indoor Gent would stick with the winning formula from the last round and why not? It worked then, it was working again as Blancquaert scored.

2-2, Mariano Llamas Andreu had to score to keep his team in it. He had 6 goals today and he made no mistake hitting it hard, high and central to make it 2-2.

2-3, Michael Ingels had the chance to send ZVC Indoor Gent into the Cup Final. As the goalkeeper spread himself, Ingels powered into the bottom left corner and it was all over!

The tournament was over for Pelugueria Mariano but they had been superb – this Semi-Final was worthy of a Cup Final. There could only be one team to go through though and that team was ZVC Indoor Gent.
