We began Round 5 with the group perfectly set-up – we began with 5th versus 6th, would then have 1st versus 2nd and would finish with 3rd versus 4th as we approached the climax of the group phase.

So, first up it was FC Dwaze Zaken versus Sloterdijk in the battle of the Dutch teams of Group A. Both teams were without a win today and needed to put that right to avoid slipping out of the tournament. Only the best placed 6 team across all 3 groups would qualify for the Plate – the other two would qualify for the Wooden Spoon. So far the 6th placed teams in Groups B and C were on 1 point and 3 points respectively. A win for either team would see them qualify for the Plate in 5th. A draw would achieve the same for FC Dwaze Zaken as they had the better goal difference.

This game proved to be an 11-goal thriller. Sloterdijk went 1-0 up before FC Dwaze Zaken recovered to lead 2-1. Sloterdijk then scored two more to regain the lead at 3-2. The yoyo effect continued with FC Dwaze Zaken regaining the lead for a second time at 4-3. The pendulum swung back to Sloterdijk who moved 6-4 ahead and it was a decisive move. Although FC Dwaze Zaken had the last word to make it 6-5 the victory went to Sloterdijk.

 
 
 

Next up was Luca Toni FC versus Epsilon Rovers. What was at stake for the 2 teams?

Luca Toni FC: They were already guaranteed Cup qualification. A win would see them win Group A with an unbeaten record as they would jump above their opponents. A draw or defeat would see them finish second with a potentially more difficult Cup Quarter-Final.

Epsilon Rovers: They were already guaranteed Cup qualification. A win would see them finish Group A with a 100% record and move into the knock-out phase as one of the favourites. A draw would also be good enough to win the group but defeat would see them slip to second.

Since our move to this current venue, only Hamid Hammers (Sco) in 2017 had secured a 100% record in a 6-team group so this would be no mean feat. If Epsilon Rovers were to achieve this they would need to come from behind as Hector Navarro Real kept up his team's record of scoring the opening goal in every single game. Evan Day had been proficient in front of goal day and he was on the score-sheet again to make it 1-1.

Luca Toni FC would hit the front again with Hector Navarro Real making it 2-1. Arguably the critical goal was the next one as Mario Flores extended the leaf to 3-1. Eloy Rubio then put the game to bed as Luca Toni FC put in a sensational performance to leapfrog their opponents and win Group A. Well done to both teams though on a fine morning's work.

 
 
 

To conclude Group A then was the not-so-small matter of Cruz Del Surely against Shahs of Sunset. This was the battle for third position which, in turn, was the battle for the final place in the Cup competition.

This could be really interesting as here in Group A we had teams on 5 points and 4 points playing for third. At the start of Round 5 in Groups B and C the third placed team was on 6 and 7 points. With the best two third placed teams qualifying for the Cup these two teams had to win and hope other results went their way. A draw would almost certainly be no good for either team.

Shahs of Sunset currently had a point advantage over their opponents and so had the greater chance of qualifying. They went 2-0 up in the first half to solidify that position thanks to goals from Paul Lehair who now had six for the tournament.

The second half also went the way of Shahs of Sunset who added further goals from Martin Weltman (2) and Anes Jusic. They would go onto secure third position and would qualify for the Cup competition – well done to them.

Cruz Del Surely finished off the group phase with goals from Nnamdi David and Danny McGee. They would progress to the Plate competition. Final score, 5-2.
