We began Round 5 with much to decide. There would be 2 or possibly 3 teams progressing to the Cup from a possible 4. The top two would qualify automatically and then the third placed team would join them if they were amongst the two best third placed teams across Groups A, B and C. It looked like 9 points was the benchmark in the other two groups so 10 points would do it, 9 would come down to goal difference whilst anything less would mean going through to the Plate instead.

First up was two of those four teams coming head to head. Argon'ze in third had the most difficult task against Mariano FC in first. Mariano FC had already secured not only their Cup qualification but also the Group C title. If Argon'ze thought this may lead to the Spanish team relaxing then they may have to think again. Mariano FC were looking to secure their third successive 100% group campaign – an unreal achievement.

Argon'ze gave it a mighty good go on Pitch A as they held their opponents level at 0-0 until half-time. In the second half though the extra quality and power of Mariano FC shone through as Mariano Llamas Andreu and Rafael Rivero Rigo scored the goals to end French resistance. For Rafael Rivero Rigo it was his 8 th goal of the campaign – doubling his tally from last year's event.

Mariano FC finished Group C off in style and would go into the knock-out phase as one of the favourites for glory. Argon'ze would progress to the Plate competition.

On Pitch B next was Fleet Street Elite 1 versus Het Sterretje.

Fleet Street Elite 1 needed a win to avoid the Wooden Spoon play-off. The best 6 th placed team would avoid the Wooden Spoon and currently that was FC De Rimmer who had 1 point in Group A and a goal difference of -9. If Fleet Street Elite grabbed a point here their goal difference of -10 would not be enough – they needed a win.

Het Sterretje were part of the same travelling group as FC De Rimmer so they could do their compatriots a big favour by not losing this game. Het Sterretje would finish 5th as long as they didn't lose by 3 goals.

Any hopes Fleet Street Elite 1 had of avoiding the Wooden Spoon play-off were seemingly dashed in the opening period of this fixture. Rob Vreugdenhil of Het Sterretje scored twice to effectively seal the English team's fate. He went on to score a hat-trick in the second half as his team ended the group on a high. Full time result, 3-0.

That left us with FC Broxelona A versus FC Dad. With all 14 other games in the group completed these two teams knew exactly what they needed to do. What was at stake as we reached the conclusion of Group C?

FC Broxelona A had the easiest equation, avoid defeat and they would finish in second position and qualify for the Cup. Defeat would mean finishing third on 7 points and missing out on Cup qualification.

FC Dad had to win first and foremost. A loss would leave them fourth and a draw would see them third on 7 points. In both scenarios they would go through to the Plate. A win would put them on 9 points and qualify for the Cup in second position.

The game was delicately poised and the first goal was always going to be crucial. It came in the first half and it went to Jack Baker of FC Broxelona A. The team sporting sensational retro Barcelona kits were now in the driving seat. They began well with 6 points from a possible 6 but had since picked up 1 from the next possible 6. This goal was not only important for the scoreline itself but in lifting morale and belief.

FC Dad had raised the bar of expectation after their Cup Semi-Final showing in Riga and were real contenders for the Cup especially after coming into this game on the back of two big wins. They were, however, unable to penetrate the FC Broxelona A defence who completed their first clean sheet of the tournament – at just the right time.

Congratulations to FC Broxelona A for qualifying for the Cup. Commiserations to FC who would progress to the Plate competition.
