FC Broxelona B (Eng)

We began Round 5 with a lot to decide. There were 3 teams in the hunt for the top 2 Cup qualification places with the third team still possibly going through as one of the best two third-placed finishers. What was more clear was the position of the teams in 4th to 6th who were all likely to make the Plate but in which order was still up for grabs. The higher the finish would mean the easier route to the Plate Final.

FC De Rimmer and Ze'Argon would finish their campaigns first as they took to the field on Pitch C. The teams were currently in 5th and 6th with FC De Rimmer ahead on goal difference. A draw in this game would confirm the teams finish in these positions. A win for either would move them 1 point ahead of FC Broxelona B in fourth (although FC Broxelona B would have a game in hand).

This was a really entertaining game with goals galore. There was 4 in the opening period as Ze'Argon lead 3-1. Three more goals followed as the French extended the lead and what proved to be the margin of victory to 5-2. Thomas Philippe scored a hat-trick for the men from Paris with goals also from Philippe Wolff and Thibault Dyen. The goals from Marcel Elshof and Berend Rheineck proved to be merely consolations on this occasion.

The result meant FC De Rimmer would be 6th and qualify for the Plate provided Fleet Street Elite 1 and Fleet Street Elite A didn't win their last group games (they didn't). Ze'Argon would finish 4th if FC Broxelona B lost their final game (read on to see if they did).

Next up was arguably the biggest game of the final round. Brioche FS met KML. KML had lead Group A in Rounds 1, 2 and 3 but a draw in Round 4 saw them slip to third position. 1 point ahead of them were Brioche FS who lost their first game but were now an excellent run of three wins in a row. A fourth would see them secure a place in the Cup and possibly win the Group A title.

KML could potentially lose and still go through as one of the two best third placed teams but it was by no means certain. A draw would see the same situation but their hand strengthened with 9 points instead of 8. A win would guarantee them a place in the Cup and could win them the group if FC Maroon lost their final game.

The game started well for KML with Jurre van Putten putting the Dutch team ahead. At half-time it was KML who were the happier team, Brioche FS had some work to do. It was the first goal the Spanish had conceded since the opening game.

After the break Brioche FS grabbed a goal themselves as Assam Ndiaye Diome scored his fourth of the tournament but KML would ensure victory with a Remy Maduro goal. KML had lay down the gauntlet in the Group A title race – FC Maroon, over to you….

As it turned out, both teams had done enough to reach the Cup. Congratulations to both.

The final thing to wrap up Group A was FC Maroon versus FC Broxelona B. With all the other games completed these two teams knew what they needed to do.

FC Maroon, the equation was simple – win and the Group A title was theirs. The game might not be so simple though. A draw or defeat would mean second place so Cup qualification was secure but they would want to win the group not only for the honour but also for a (theoretically) easier Quarter-Final tie.

FC Broxelona B, a draw or win would mean 4 th position. A defeat would mean 5th position. We have seen in these tournaments before that too many draws can really hinder your progress in the league standings as FC Maroon & FC Broxelona B will both attest to in their previous appearances at the Budapest Fives. Too many draws can be demoralising as you look at the league table but a win here for FC Broxelona B could give them momentum going into the knock-out phase.

On the field of play it was FC Maroon who grabbed a lead in the first half as Matt Alawi scored his fourth of the tournament. It was a goal that would win his team the game and Group A. It capped a remarkable performance from FC Maroon this morning that saw them top the table with 13 points from a possible 15 and they were yet to concede a goal. They were ruthlessly efficient.

For Broxelona B it capped a frustrating morning. 3 x 1-1 draws and 2 x 1-0 defeats – highly competitive throughout but not having quite enough in front of goal to turn the defeats into draws and the draws into wins. The Plate awaited them.
