The
2017 Budapest Fives Wooden Spoon Final was the
battle for 17th position, a consolation prize
and one last game to enjoy on these team's Budapest
tour.
The
game would be contested by Maverick FC and Spider
Mans & Mighty Falcon. Maverick FC came into
the game as the 17th ranked team courtesy of their
higher points tally in the group phase. Both teams
had found hitting the target difficult this morning
with a goal between them (scored by Mavericks).
Mavericks also boasted the stronger defensive
record with 9 goals conceded compared to the 14
by Spider Mans & Mighty Falcon.
Mavericks
won the Wooden Spoon at the 2016 Krakow Trophy
and with the superior record here you fancied
they might take the Wooden Spoon here in Budapest
too. Spider Mans & Mighty Falcon had not read
the script though. Seb Dunnett scored his team's
first goal and what a time to get it. Could it
bring them some 11th hour glory?
They
did not hold the lead for long as Will Gubbins
equalized before half-time. It meant the teams
changed ends level again – at 1-1. Maverick FC
won the Wooden Spoon in Krakow relatively comfortably
although the game finished 5-3. This was a closer
contest and in the second half just one goal would
win it.
Alex
Pyke scored Mavericks goal in the group phase
and he doubled his tally and gave his team a 2-1
lead in this Final. Ultimately the goal proved
enough to win the Wooden Spoon as Spider Man &
Mighty Falcon were unable to get back on level
terms.
Congratulations
to Maverick FC who finished the day how they would've
liked to have started it and they took the Wooden
Spoon prize. Our commiserations to Spider Mans
& Mighty Falcon who we trust had a great day
at the Budapest Fives and also a great weekend
in the Hungarian capital despite results not exactly
going their way.
