Round 3 started with Meglepetes taking on Budapest Celtic Greens. The former were unbeaten and enjoying a share of first place in the table, the latter were at the bottom of the table.

Budapest Celtic has a long and rich history in our tournaments dating back to their debut in 2011. They have appeared at every Budapest Fives since and taken in 4 overseas tours to Barcelona, Bratislava, Krakow and Valencia. They have 3 runners-up finishes in Budapest and 1 tournament success at the 2013 Krakow Trophy. In fact, the Greens squad were runners-up here last year. This was a repeat of the 2016 Budapest Fives Cup Final…in name at least.

They say a week is a long time in politics and a year is a lifetime in football. Both these teams were much changed since 12 months ago with Meglepetes having just 1 player from the title-winning team of a year ago. Budapest Celtic Greens were a completely fresh squad.

The Cup Final saw Meglepetes win 3-1 in 2016. Round 3 of Group C in 2017 saw the two teams play out a 0-0 draw.

Seagulls FC and Spider Mans & Eagle was the next big kick-off in Group Pitch C. Seagulls FC were without a win and looking for their first goal of the tournament. They had been tight at the back conceding just 1 goal so if they could build on that platform they could well move up the table. The next game was not an ideal one for them as they were due to play 2016 Krakow Trophy runners-up, Spider Mans and Eagle…

..or as we should be saying Spider Mans & Majestic Eagle. The Spider Mans marketing department has no doubt been busy spying some commercial opportunities with a subtle re-brand.

Spider Mans & Majestic Eagle had enjoyed a steady start so far. A 1-1 draw against last year's runners-up and a 1-0 win over Maverick FC. A second win here could help them set the pace at the top of the table. Things were even early on as the two teams entered half-time level at 0-0.

In the second half things opened up thanks to a brace from Nick McIntosh scoring for the third game in a row. Steve Wildman added a third to complete a fine second half performance.

Spider Mans & Majestic Eagle led the way in Group C.

Missing Magpies and Maverick FC would meet in game 9 of Group C in an all-English contest. Maverick FC were looking for their first win of the day but had started well with just the one goal conceded – they needed to add goals to the mix to push up the table. Missing Magpies had 1 win and 1 draw to their name thus far and were our league leaders at the start of Round 3.

The first goal of the game was struck by Henry Pescod as Missing Magpies took a 1-0 lead into the break. In the second half it was Henry Pescod again as the Magpies completed their second successive win.

The result represented a very good start for the Missing Magpies who had made their second best start to a tournament (after 2015 Berlin Fives, 9 points after three games). They were joint top of the table with Spider Mans & Majestic Eagle enjoying an identical points haul, goals scored and goals against tally. Those two teams were due to meet in the final round of fixtures – it could be some finale.

For Mavericks it was a disappointing result that saw them slip a place in the league table.
