We began Round 5 on Pitch A with Meglepetes versus Mavericks. The tournament format meant the top 2 teams would automatically qualify and the two best third placed teams in the draw would join them. With Groups A and B complete we knew that Group C would have three places in the Cup.

Meglepetes would be one of those teams as long as they did not lose and Budapest Celtic Greens won with a swing in goal difference. They were currently on +2 to the Greens -1. A win for Meglepetes combined with defeat for Missing Magpies would see them win Group C and mark a solid start to their defence of the Budapest Fives. Maverick FC were playing to avoid the Wooden Spoon and needed to better the result of Seagulls FC to do so.

Maverick FC had struggled for goals today but put that right when Alex Pyke scored. However, it was just their luck that when they scored the goal the defensive prowess we'd seen up until now deserted them. Balazs Billein was the main beneficiary as he scored 4 and Mate Palmai also scored in a comprehensive 5-1 win.

Meglepetes signed off in Group C on a high and would go into the knock-out phase believing that retaining their title was a distinct possibility.

It was a disappointing way for Maverick FC to finish the group and in terms of margin was an outlier of a result compared to the rest of their group campaign.

On Pitch B next was Spider Mans & Eagle versus Missing Magpies. Missing Magpies had already qualified for the Cup and needed a win to secure the Group C title. They could possibly do it with a draw if other results went their way. Spider Mans & Majestic Eagle needed the result more – a win would see them qualify. A draw would be enough as long as Budapest Celtic Greens didn't also win and also win big.

The all-important first goal went to Spider Mans & Majestic Eagle. Ryan Stevens, 1 of 2 Spider Mans who had been ever-present on all 6 of their European tours, scored the goal. It was a goal that gave his team a 1-0 lead at the break.

In the second half Nick McIntosh doubled the lead for the Spider Mans team. He finished the 2016 Krakow Trophy as the third top scorer in the tournament with an impressive tally of 10 goals. In a lower scoring tournament, McIntosh was now on 5 for the day here in Budapest.

It was a great win for Spider Mans & Majestic Eagle and a great way to finish the group campaign. The win saw them rise to second place in the table and secure their place in the Cup. For Missing Magpies it was a disappointing way to finish the group phase as they slipped to third place but they had still done enough to qualify for the Cup and would progress with a good record of 3 wins, 1 draw and just this one defeat.

That left us with Budapest Celtic Greens versus Seagulls FC. What was at stake as we reached the conclusion of Group C?

For Budapest Celtic Greens they needed a win and Spider Mans & Majestic Eagle to lose in order to leap up into third and secure a place in the Cup. They could possibly still qualify with a win and Spider Mans draw if they won big to earn the greater goal difference. Any other result and Budapest Celtic Greens would be in the Plate.

Seagulls FC would need to better the result of Maverick FC to finish 5th. A draw would be good enough to see them qualify for the Plate as even if they finished 6 th they would have a better record than the 6th placed teams from Groups A and B. A defeat would mean a place in the Wooden Spoon play-off.

The match was going the English team's way early on and they hit the front in the first half when Ben Russell scored his team's first goal of the tournament. Could it earn them all 3 points?

We kicked off the second half with Budapest Celtic Greens desperately needing goals although it could well all be in vain as Spider Mans & Eagle were leading 1-0 in their game at the break. Budapest Celtic Greens hit back in the second half an equalized through Edoardo Battaglion. The home team completed the comeback when they took a 2-1 lead with Battaglion scoring again.

The game finished at 2-1 but sadly for Budapest Celtic Greens they missed out on the Cup due to other results. They would qualify for the Plate in 4 th place. Seagulls FC would also progress to the Plate – they avoided the Wooden Spoon play-off as they finished above Maverick FC on goal difference.
