Budapest Celtic Greens (Hun)

The second final of the day (after the Wooden Spoon) would see Racing Literki FC versus Budapest Celtic Greens. With seven games of football already under their belt the two teams would need to summon one last burst of energy to ensure they would be picking up winners and not runners-up medals in the presentation.

We had two strong teams reach the Plate Final with Racing Literki only suffering 1 defeat all day – in their very first game to a very strong team in Red Light Runners. They could consider themselves unlucky not to reach the Cup but 3 draws in their other 4 games stalled their progress. They had been sensational in the Plate knock-out with 5-0 and 4-1 wins in the Quarter-Final and Semi-Finals. They were hitting top form at just the right time. With 14 goals for and 2 goals against since that opening game defeat it would be a brave man to bet against them.

Budapest Celtic Greens also had just the one defeat today with 3 wins and 3 draws in their other games. They had scored 8 with 6 against and their progress had been tougher than their opponents in the knock-out phase. The Greens were Runners-Up in the Cup Final 12 months ago, could they pick up winners medals in the Plate this year?

With the game underway it was Racing Literki FC who took an early lead and it was their top goalscorer on the day Michal Przybylski who scored it. It took his tally to 6 goals for the tournament – a fine return. With the goal advantage Racing Literki FC looked content to pass the ball around, take the urgency out of the game and wait for the opportunities to come to them. They looked comfortable as they went into half-time still 1-0 up.

The second half kicked off in much the same way but as the game progressed Budapest Celtic Greens stepped it up. They gradually wrestled control of the game and were on the front foot for most of the half. Racing Literki FC defended well and when Budapest Celtic Greens did find a path to goal Bartlomiej Jedrysiak stood in their way. The Polish goalkeeper for the Spanish team had a superb game and made some excellent stops. There was one save in particular, diving high and to his left to push out a Joe McCann shot that was curling into the top corner.

Eventually, time ran out for Budapest Celtic Greens and Racing Literki FC had done it – they would be the Plate champions of the 2017 Budapest Fives. Given their record on the day overall you have to admit they deserved it but they were run close at the end.

We'd like to thank Budapest Celtic Greens for attending and offer our commiserations for the Final. Budapest Celtic still had an active role in this tournament though as the Hoops squad were about to take the field for the Cup Final.
