We began Round 5 with a lot to be decided – we still had 4 teams in with a shout of qualifying for the Cup. Two of those teams would come head to head in the form of Racing Literki FC and East Compton Eagles. They were effectively playing for third spot and not only against the teams in Group A but also Groups B & C as the two best third placed teams would qualify for the Cup. 1 point would certainly not be enough but a 3 points gave them a fighting chance.

Racing Literki could possibly qualify outright if they took a win. A win for them combined with a defeat for Budapest Celtic Hoops and they could finish in 2nd place to guarantee Cup qualification. Hoops would be playing Red Light Runners so this was a definite possibility.

East Compton Eagles came into the game on a high having picked up their first win. A second win might not be enough for them (subject to other results in other groups) but even if it wasn't it would give them great momentum going into the Plate and mark them down as one of the teams to watch for Plate glory.

With the game underway, there was no score in the first half. A draw was no good for either team – could they find a winner? Try as they might they were unable to penetrate their opposition's defence and we had two goalkeepers in form. Both Bartlomiej Jedrysiak (Racing Literki FC) and David Coppard (East Compton Eagles) were on their way to their 3rd clean sheets in five games. The game finished 0-0 and as a result both teams would progress to the Plate competition in the knock-out phase of today's tournament.

Next up was the big game in Group A: Budapest Celtic Hoops versus Red Light Runners. Due to a two point lead at the top, Red Light Runners only needed a draw to win the Group A title – a win would see them do it in style. If Budapest Celtic Hoops were to win then it would be them winning Group A and, with it, a theoretically easier Quarter-Final draw in the knockout phase. A draw would guarantee Budapest Celtic Hoops second place and Cup qualification. A defeat (combined with a Racing Literki FC win) could potentially see them miss out on the Cup.

A defeat for Red Light Runners would be their first in the group phase of our tournaments but in the context of today's tournament wouldn't matter too much as they were through to the Cup regardless of this result. In the battle of the top two teams it was Red Light Runners who struck first. Ian Ward had his shooting boots on as he found the net for the third game in a row. Declan Doherty's fourth goal of the day meant that Red Light Runners enjoyed a 2-0 lead at half-time.

In the second half there was a goal for each side as Jason Clowes scored his second of the tournament for Budapest Celtic Hoops (doubling his tally from the 2016 tournament). There was a fifth tournament goal for Stephen Doherty as Red Light Runners ran out 3-1 victors.

As things turned out, both teams had done enough to qualify for the Cup competition in first and second place. It was the fourth time in as many tournaments Red Light Runners had won their group.

The final thing to wrap up Group A was Spider Mans & Great Haw versus Always Short. This was a repeat of a fixture that was played in the 2016 Krakow Trophy. On that occasion in Poland it was Spider Mans & Great Hawk who emerged victorious, 1-0, on their way to winning the group.

Today's circumstances were somewhat different for both teams. Spider Mans & Great Hawk were fifth at the start of the game and could rise to fourth with a win should East Compton Eagles fail to win. The Spider Mans team knew that Plate football awaited regardless of this result. For Always Short, a win would mean they avoided the Wooden Spoon play-off. A draw or even defeat might be good enough for that but it would depend upon what happened in the other groups.

Both these teams started off Group A with a 0-0 draw and they looked like they might finish it that way too. We reached half-time without a goal scored. The two teams also played out an even second half but this time with goals to enjoy. David Brown scored on his first tour for Spider Mans & Great Hawk whilst Richard Stewart scored for Always Short – his first eurofootballfives.com tour goal.

The result meant that both teams would qualify for this afternoon's Plate competition and Spider Mans & Great Hawk had managed to emulate their Eagles team in Lisbon by drawing 4 games out of 5 in the group phase.
