The eurofootballfives.com tour hit Budapest for the 7th successive year as the Budapest Fives was entrusted to become the curtain-raiser for our 11th season of European football. 18 teams assembled for the big kick-off so let's get our review of the action underway.

The first two challengers to begin their campaign in Group A on would be Racing Literki FC (Spa) versus Red Light Runners (Ire). Racing Literki FC were on debut so it would be our first glimpse of them in action but Red Light Runners were no strangers to our tournaments.

Red Light Runners were the longest-serving eurofootballfives.com team in the tournament draw with their involvement in our tournaments dating back to 2008 when they competed at both the 2008 Krakow Trophy and the 2008 Barca Fives. Their most recent event was the 2016 Barcelona Fives and they put all this experience to good use when they scored the opening goal of the tournament in the first half when Stephen Doherty put the Irish lads 1-0 up in the first half.

There was to be no further addition to the score after the break as Red Light Runners got off to the perfect start. It was a tough opening fixture for Racing Literki FC and they acquitted themselves well. Not all games would be this tough!

East Compton Eagles (Eng) have tasted eurofootballfives.com action on three previous occasions. They made their debut at our inaugural Berlin Fives tournament in 2012. They had two sides “Eagles” and “Seagulls”. The Eagles finished joint top (and level with the eventual Runners-Up) of their group and made the Cup Semi-Finals where they went out to the eventual winners, Rigford Seahawks. At the 2013 Mallorca Fives they had another successful group phase as they topped Group B ahead of 2012 Valencia Fives champions FC Miracle (Hun). East Compton Eagles run in Mallorca ended at the hands of two-times eurofootballfives.com winners Skidmarks in the Cup Semi-Finals.

They were last seen in action at the 2014 Amsterdam Fives where they finished second of six teams in Group A between 3 x eurofootballfives.com winners Athletico Do Hollande. They drew Melee FC (2 x eurofootballfives.com finalists) in the Cup Quarter-Finals and finished 2-2 at the end of normal time. They exited the tournament in a penalty shoot-out.

Their return to eurofootballfives.com football would be against Always Short. Always Short had some squad issues prior to the tournament with their squad of 6 reduced to 4 fit players able to take the field. We recruited 3 loan signings to bolster their numbers but it would take time for the new team-mates to gel. They began pretty well though and took a point after a battling 0-0 draw.

The final two teams in Group A were Budapest Celtic Hoops of Hungary and Spider Mans & Great Hawk of England.

Budapest Celtic had been involved in every Budapest Fives to date with a rich and varied history (more on them later). They had three teams in the event and the news from the Celtic camp was that the Hoops was likely to be the strongest of the three squads.

The Great Hawk team have been the second squad of the Spider Mans group since the 2015 Lisbon Tournament when they took their tournament bow. They drew a really tough group and despite just 1 defeat in 5 games finished 3 rd to miss out on the Cup. In the Plate they won their Quarter-Final 3-1 to reach a Semi Final against Frank Hirth B (could easily have been a Cup Semi-Final on another day) but Great Hawk went out on penalties. They also appeared at the 2016 Krakow Trophy where 4 wins and 1 draw saw them win Group A. A 3-0 Quarter-Final win over Cudny Jozef (Pol) saw them meet their Eagles squad in the Semi-Final where they went out 3-0.

Great Hawk saw a re-branding in Amsterdam to Spider Mans Ressies. They finished second in Group B behind eventual runners-up Spain United. They then went out to eventual winners Benecke in the Cup Quarter-Finals.

This promised, on paper, to be a competitive match and so it proved to be on the pitch too. The two teams could not be separated and we finished level at 0-0.
