It's Back (Eng)

Going into the final round of games there were 4 teams who all had a chance of reaching the Cup competition. Of these teams, Dickie Dogs had the hardest task as they met the already qualified and already crowned Group B champions Luminy Wolves.

If anyone was in any doubt of the magnitude of Dickie Dogs task they only had to look at Luminy Wolves group record in eurofootballfives.com competition. Including today they had won 4 out of 4 groups, winning 13 of 15 matches, scoring 58 goals and conceding just 8. Dickie Dogs themselves had only lost 1 of 8 matches at this stage so all was not lost and after a goalless first-half they were bang in this game.

A draw would not be good enough for them to make the Cup and so needed the win. Could they find a goal in the second half to win against the odds? They could and is was Peter Grigg's second of the day who provided it. Sadly for the Dickie Dogs though, Luminy Wolves' Allan Gosselin struck twice in the second period to earn his side a 2-1 win and their outstanding group record continued although they were certainly made to work hard for it today. Dickie Dogs would have to see how the other two results would affect them.

Intermore FC and Budapest Celtic Lions met on Pitch B with the Hungarian side only really needing a draw to secure their place in the Cup if It's Back and The Spice Boys drew. If there was a positive result in that game, the Lions would need victory to ensure Cup qualification. For their part, Intermore FC could only realistically make the Plate where they effectively needed a draw. They could only be denied as the best placed 6th team if they lost and ACE & The Swagmen (Group C) won or if they drew and ACE & The Swagmen overturned a big swing in goal difference.

For both teams their fate was in their own hands – all they needed to do was grab it. The man that stepped up to the plate on this occasion was Gabor Harsonyi who'd had a fine morning thus far and capped it off with a goal in each half taking his tally to the day to 4 goals.

Intermore FC were unable to respond and fell to a 2-0 defeat but will feel, as we do, their play deserved more than the 2 points they'd earned this morning. As it turned out they had done enough to make the Plate competition so still had work to do this afternoon.

Budapest Celtic Lions had got the result they needed with the win and qualified for the Cup. So far Budapest Celtic teams had qualified for the Cup in 7 out of 7 attempts with the Pumas to come in Group C looking to make it 8 out of 8.

The final game of Group B was The Spice Boys versus It's Back. The results above meant that a win for It's Back would qualify them for the Cup in 2nd or as one of the best 3rd placed teams on 8 points. A draw would be worthless for both teams as It's Back could finish in 3rd they'd miss out on the Cup with 6 points as Stani's Mates in 3rd in Group A had already returned a haul of 7 points. A win for The Spice Boys would move them on to 7 points but would need to win by 5 to overturn Stani's Mates goal difference advantage. It could still be enough if they didn't win by 5 but they would need to wait for the conclusion of Group C to find out.

So, on the eve of the final day of the Premier League season it was all very complicated and all very tense in Budapest too – where were the Sky cameras though!?! Pfff! Putting that to one side the teams just had to go out and play, grab the 3 points and see what happened.

It's Back were on a good run of form with 4 points out of a possible 6 but The Spice Boys came into the game on the back of two defeats. Come half-time we were no closer to knowing who could grab 3 points as we went in level at 0-0. Cast your minds back to Round 4 when we said It's Back had been solid at the back and if they could find some more goals could pose a threat in this tournament…..well they did just that in the second half as goalkeeper Simon Hawkins kept a 4th clean sheet in 5 games and at the other end Tom Brunt popped up to seal a second successive victory with a goal for a 1-0 win. It marked a strong end to the group phase with 7 points out of 9 and sealed Cup qualification – a great effort.

For The Spice Boys things had started off very promising picking up 4 points early doors but under the Budapest sun and with a limited squad size results fell away and they finished 5th in the end. It was the lunch break now so there was time to recharge the batteries and come out fighting for the afternoon Plate competition.
