After 58 games of football we came down to the most important of them all. Game 59 – The 2012 Budapest Fives Cup Final.

The two teams set to do battle for the honour and glory of victory were ABC United (Romania) versus Budapest Celtic Tigers (Hungary). The Tigers had been here before 12 months ago when they came so close to being the only team to prevent Olympic Phil Babb winning a title when they lost out on penalties. They had a chance to upgrade from Runners-Up to Winners medals in 2012.

ABC United though were massively impressive on debut and would be the favourites going into the game. They had stormed into the Final with 13 goals in their last two games and yet to concede in the whole tournament. By contrast, the Tigers had to fight hard to get through a tough Semi-Final against the Luminy Wolves. We wondered if that may have taken something out of them physically and/or emotionally/mentally.

ABC United got off to the best possible start and scored early – it was a crucial goal psychologically as well giving them the upper hand and the momentum which would have counted for more than the one goal. From there ABC United went from strength to strength as Robert Florin Matei scored a first half hat-trick. It would take his personal tally for the day to 8 goals that would see him crowned as the Top Goalscorer for the day.

Ciprian Mozacu scored a fourth goal before half-time and we already knew our winners with another half of football still to play. The second half was a bit more even as Boiesan scored his second of the tournament but then came a moment that would spoil a record for Paul Stegarescu. No-one had yet kept 8 clean sheets in a tournament but Stegarescu was on 7 but Bruno spoiled his perfect record for the day when he pulled a goal back for the Tigers. Still, was a stunning performance from Stegarescu, Matei and all the ABC United team. Final score, 5-1.

We offer our consolations to Budapest Celtic Tigers who were Runners-Up for the second year in a row – maybe third time lucky in 2013?

Our congratulations go to ABC United – worthy 2012 Budapest Fives Champions! We hope to see you all again at a tournament very soon.
