We began Round 5 with a lot to decide. The winner of the Group A table was up for grabs. There were 3 teams battling for the two automatic Cup qualification places although one of the best third place finishers places was a string possibility. We started with EMC French Nuts. They had been the big losers in Round 4 as they slipped from first position to third position. It was pretty harsh given they had only lost the one game.

As the first of the 3 teams chasing top spot to play they had a chance to lay down the gauntlet to Sharks and FC Yol. Unfortunately for CBT FC that meant the French team were likely to be fully focused and chasing goals as goal difference was very likely to be an important factor at the top of the table.

EMC French Nuts wasted no time in avenging their last game defeat. Richard Leibovici opened the scoring and Alexis Bellec made it 2-0 before the change of ends. Bruno Abjean made it 3-0 in the second half before Clement Yver struck for 4-0 and Abjean was on target again to complete the scoring at 5-0. It was their second 5-0 win in Group A. With 12 points and a greater goal difference than Sharks and FC Yol (who were due to play each other), EMC French Nuts had secured Cup qualification. Well done to them.

It was a tough end to the group phase for CBT FC but they now had the lunch break to regroup, recharge the batteries and prepare for the Plate competition this afternoon.

Given the result above, at the start of play, Sharks sat second in the table with FC Yol three points behind in third. What was at stake for the two clubs?

Sharks needed just a point to win Group A and secure a, theoretically easier, Cup Quarter-Final place. Defeat would see them miss out on the Cup due to goal difference. This seemed crazy given their 100% record to date but it would be reality. An FC Yol win would see three teams share first place on 12 points but EMC French Nuts and FC Yol would have superior goal difference. Should FC Yol draw then 10 points was likely to be enough as one of the best third placed finishers. A defeat could be enough but would lessen their chances.

Group A had been the highest scoring goup by some distance today – an average of 3.47 goals per game compared to 2.47 and 2.27 in Groups B & C. However, goals were conspicuous by their absence in this match. The top of the table clash resulted in stalemate. Both defences were on top and played out a 0-0 draw.

It meant Sharks would win Group A – well done to them – and they remained unbeaten now through two group phases at the Barcelona Fives. As it turned out, 10 points was also enough for FC Yol to qualify as the best third placed finishing team. Congratulations to them, a sensational recovery from opening game defeat.

The final thing to wrap up Group A was Argon'ze A versus RAF Boulmer. With all the other games completed these two teams knew what they needed to do.

RAF Boulmer needed to win and hope they had done enough to be the best 6 th placed team to qualify for the Plate and avoid the Wooden Spoon game. As things stood, 6th place in the other two groups was 1 point. So, 3 points here should be enough for RAF Boulmer with the other groups also reaching their conclusion.

For Argon'ze a draw or victory would see them secure fourth position in the table. The better the group finish the better their draw was likely to be in the knock-out phase (in theory at least) so they would want a positive result here for that reason and also to take some momentum into the Plate.

On the field of play it was RAF Boulmer that got off to the ideal start. They lead 1-0 thanks to Tam Crainie's opener. It got even better when he increased that lead to 2-0 before the interval. In the second half RAF Boulmer were really finding their mojo as Harry McClurg made it 3-0, Max Fox scored for 4-0 and Harry McClurg chipped in again for 5-0. It was a great way for RAF Boulmer to complete Group A as both these teams would progress to the Plate.
