Given
the result above, at the start of play, Sharks
sat second in the table with FC Yol three points
behind in third. What was at stake for the two
clubs?
Sharks
needed just a point to win Group A and secure
a, theoretically easier, Cup Quarter-Final place.
Defeat would see them miss out on the Cup due
to goal difference. This seemed crazy given
their 100% record to date but it would be reality.
An FC Yol win would see three teams share first
place on 12 points but EMC French Nuts and FC
Yol would have superior goal difference. Should
FC Yol draw then 10 points was likely to be
enough as one of the best third placed finishers.
A defeat could be enough but would lessen their
chances.
Group
A had been the highest scoring goup by some
distance today – an average of 3.47 goals per
game compared to 2.47 and 2.27 in Groups B &
C. However, goals were conspicuous by their
absence in this match. The top of the table
clash resulted in stalemate. Both defences were
on top and played out a 0-0 draw.
It
meant Sharks would win Group A – well done to
them – and they remained unbeaten now through
two group phases at the Barcelona Fives. As
it turned out, 10 points was also enough for
FC Yol to qualify as the best third placed finishing
team. Congratulations to them, a sensational
recovery from opening game defeat.
