Welcome to Spain for the 17th edition of the Barcelona Fives football tournament. We kicked off on the 15th October with 18 teams ready for action (some more than others with hangovers fresh)…the big kick-off was upon us.

We had teams from England, France, Poland and Spain all assembled to try and win the coveted trophy. We had winners of 4 previous titles in the field as 2008 winners (Rapid B Pavas), 2015 & 2021 winners (Club Esportiu Llefia) and 2017 winners (L'Albiceleste) were all here to try and add to their success. Club Esportiu Llefia were aiming to become only the third team in our history to successfully defend a title following Athletico Do Hollande winning the 2010 & 2011 Algarve Opens and Ecuador 100% winning the 2019 & 2022 Mallorca Fives (no event in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid).

The first two challengers to get us underway in Group A on Pitch A this year were EMC French Nuts (Fra) and FC Yol (Eng). These were two teams making their debut in our events and it was the French who made the initial first impression. They got off to a flyer in the opening half with goals from Bruno Abjean, Alexis Bellec and Richard Leibovici

At 3-0 down FC Yol had a mighty job on their hands in the second half but they steadied the ship preventing further damage to the goals against column. They also reduced arrears and bagged a consolation as Joe Holmes scored his team's debut goal in our events. Final score, 3-1.

The first phase of the 2022 Barcelona Fives tournament would be decided on a group basis with three groups of 6 teams in each group. The teams finishing 1st and 2nd in each group would progress to the Cup competition along with the best two third placed finishers. The other 3 rd placed team and those finishing 4th and 5th in each group along with the best 6th placed team would progress to the Plate competition Both the Cup and Plate would be played as a knock-out with Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Final. The remaining two 6th placed teams would compete in a Wooden Spoon play-off.

Game 2 of Group A was CBT FC versus RAF Boulmer in an all-England encounter.

CBT FC were making their debut in our events and it proved to be a successful first game as a goal in each half saw them secure a 2-0 victory. Jordan Hope had the honour of scoring his team's first goal in Europe and, for good measure, he also scored their second. With a clean sheet to boot it was job well done for CBT FC.

The final two teams in Group A were Sharks of Spain and Argon'ze A of France.

Sharks made their debut 12 months ago at the 2021 Barcelona Fives and it was almost the perfect debut! They drew 2-2 in their first game against Old Boys Blue Magic Dublin before 2-1 wins over FC Dad and Club Esportiu Llefia. They completed Group A in style with a 4-0 win over Son Les Onze and pick up the group win. In the knock-out phase they defeated FC Tpaktop 3-2 and set up a Cup Final against Club Esportiu Llefia. Although they defeated them in the group phase they missed out in the final as their opponents won the title with a 3-2 victory.

However, it was Argon'ze of France who took the lead thanks to Ali Daoudi but the lead was not to last long. Sharks hit back through Michiel Geens and Tom Frumerman to lead 2-1 at half-time.

In the second period it was Sharks who extended their lead. David Clavijo gave the Spanish team a two goal cushion. Argon'ze A were not giving up without a fight as Mathieu Schincariol pulled a gola back for 3-2. The next goal proved crucial as Frumerman sealed the victory for Sharks, 4-2.
