Round
5 of Group B began with Mestallaban versus FC
Miracle. This was quite some game in the scheme
of things. Mestallaban were one of three teams
vying for the last Cup qualification place from
Group B. The Irish team were in pole position
but had the toughest game of all in this final
round of fixtures. FC Miracle had played four,
won four – could Mestallaban stop them.
It
was one hell of an ask for the Irish team but
a task they took to admirably. They struck the
first blow as Lorcan Bannon's shot, with the aid
of a deflection, found it's way into the bottom
of the FC Miracle net. At half-time, Mestallaban
led 1-0.
Could
they hold on for one more half of football? They
could do better than that. Emmet Egan made it
2-0 after the break and the hearts of Club Tropicana
FC and Kings Old Boys must have sunk. Their challenge
for the Cup was disappearing with Mestallaban's
success.Emmet Egan made it 3-0 and the Irish team
had pulled off a sensational victory…….was this
really the same team that played in the Wooden
Spoon competition in Prague?
FC
Miracle had suffered their first defeat of the
day but I am sure they were not too worried as
they still qualified as Group B champions.
Next
up was Notigham Pressa versus FC Dad. The Spanish
team did not have a great to deal play for as
they were guaranteed to be playing in the Trophy
competition but a win would give them confidence
and may just be the turning point in their day
for a successful knock-out challenge.
FC
Dad still had hopes of making the Plate – they
needed three things to happen. First, they needed
to win here. Second, they needed Kings Old Boys
to lose and finally they needed a 4-goal swing
in goal difference to take the final Plate place.
The
first part of the plan seemed to be going well
when Calum Jones fired FC Dad into the lead –
a lead they were to hold until half-time. After
the interval, Nothigam Pressa played the role
of party poopers though as they forced an equalizer
and for a team who had lost 4 games in the second
half it was ironic that their second half performance
in this final group game earned them their first
point.
The
1-1 result broke the Notigham Pressa duck but
it also meant FC Dad's hopes of Plate qualification
were over. Both teams would head to the Trophy
competition for their knock-out football.
The
final game of Group B was Club Tropicana Drinks
FC versus Kings Old Boys. The results above meant
that Kings Old Boys were already assured of Plate
qualification when before Round 5 started the
options of Cup, Plate or Trophy football were
all still possible. The only thing they could
play for now was 3rd or 4th with the higher placing
meaning a theoretically easier Quarter-Final tie.
For
Club Tropicana Drinks FC there was still the Cup
to play for but Mestallaban's result meant that
only an 8-goal win would be good enough for them
to reach the Cup. A win would put them level with
the Irish on 10 points but the heavy loss to FC
Miracle meant they had a far inferior goal difference.
Avoiding defeat would secure Club Tropicana Drinks
FC in third position.
Club
Tropicana Drinks FC would need the biggest win
of the day to upset Mestallaban and they opened
the scoring in this game through captain Daniel
Archer. At half-time it was just the one goal
lead….so a mere 7 required in the second half.
Let's not forget that they had serious opposition
in Kings Old Boys – this wasn't a case of playing
San Marino and guessing how many it would be.
A second half hat-trick for David Sajic meant
the final score was 4-0. It was a great win but
in the context of what was needed fell short.
So,
Mestallaban would finish 2nd and qualify for the
Cup with Club Tropicana Drinks FC and Kings Old
Boys progressing to the Plate in that order.
