FC Poloboc (Mda)

It was Cup Final time in Czechia. After 51 games of football we came down to the most important of them all. Game 52, the match that would determine the 2024 Prague Veterans champions. Aston Birra (Ecu) won our first Summer Veterans tournament this year. Who would join them in the winners enclosure as the 2024 Prague Veterans champions?

This is how we lined-up:

FC Mahou (Eng)

Best appearance to date: Champions in the 2011 Prague Masters, 2013 Algarve Open, 2017 Mallorca Veterans, 2022 Lisbon Veterans.

Record today: Played 7, Won 5, Drawn 2, Lost 0.

Goal difference today: 17-3

Current unbeaten run: 11 games in regular time (dating back to Mallorca 2023).

Today's top goalscorer: Oliver James & Steve Sachro (6)

Clean sheets: 4

FC Poloboc (Mda)

Best appearance to date: 2023 Barcelona Fives Veterans winners.

Record today: Played 7, Won 6, Drawn 1, Lost 0.

Goal difference today: 27-6

Current unbeaten run: 14 games (dating back to Barcelona 2023)

Today's top goalscorer: Leonid Cigureanu (13)

Clean sheets: 3

This really was a heavyweight contest with both teams on extended unbeaten runs that pre-dated today's performance and 5 titles between them. FC Mahou could take their tally of titles overall to 5 (equal best in our history) and could be the first team to win 3 Veterans titles. They had the best defence and most clean sheets of all the teams today.

FC Poloboc were aiming for two titles on the bounce. They were the top scorers today with 27 goals and the best goal difference of +21. They had won 13 of those 14 unbeaten games including a big win over Alea Iacta Est in the last round.

As the referee blew the whistle for kick-off it didn't take long for Leonid Cigureanu, the tournament's top scorer, to make his mark. His 14th goal of the day came put FC Poloboc ahead. FC Mahou hadn't lost a knock-out game in our tournaments since Alicante 2019. In fact their last 3 knock-out games had ended in draws and gone to penalties – having gone behind, they may well have taken a draw at this point. FC Poloboc continued to press, showcasing their attacking prowess that even the tournament's best defence to date couldn't keep at bay. Victor Zagorneanu doubled their lead with his third goal of the day, further dampening FC Mahou's chances. As the match progressed, it became evident that FC Poloboc's relentless attack and solid defense were too much for FC Mahou. The English team had only conceded 3 in 7 games today but FC Poloboc managed 3 in this game. It was perhaps fitting that captain Grigore Badea sealed the victory with his third goal of the day and applied the finishing touch to another successful campaign.

FC Poloboc had won the 2023 Barcelona Veterans Cup Final 3-0 and repeated the feat here in Prague. Leonid Cigureanu finished as the day's top scorer, highlighting his crucial role in the team's success. A huge well done to him.

Meanwhile, our commiserations go to FC Mahou. Despite their valiant efforts they were unable to overcome FC Poloboc's dominance and had to settle for the runners-up spot. On a hot day with injuries it was a supreme effort.

Last but not least, we leave you today with our congratulations to FC Poloboc. With two Cup trophies in their cabinet they were a team currently on fire. FC Poloboc had cemented their status as a formidable force in veterans' football, extending their unbeaten streak and demonstrating their potential for future successes. As they continue to build on this remarkable achievement, we look forward to witnessing more memorable performances and victories from FC Poloboc in the tournaments to come. Can anyone stop them?
