The eurofootballfives Summer Veterans Tournament is a moveable feast. Following the veritable delights of Alicante (2019), Lisbon (2013, 2016 & 2022), Mallorca (2014, 2017, 2023 & 2024) and the Algarve (2015 & 2018) we have added a second summer option for 2024. That second option is Prague which will play host for the 11th edition of this tournament. Aston Birra of Ecuador won our first Veterans event of the season in Mallorca and we had 14 teams assembled to battle it out for glory in the Czech capital.

We were delighted to welcome teams from the CIS, Czechia, England, France, Moldova, Poland and Spain to challenge for the title.

First up in Group A was FC Tpaktop I (CIS) versus Alea Iacta Est (Pol) – both regulars on our circuit who we will preview in more detail as this report progresses. Alea Iacta Est had enjoyed success before at these events and it was they who got off to the perfect start in the early 10.00 fixture. Kamil Zawada was the man to score the opening goal of the tournament to put the Polish side ahead. He doubled the lead for 2-0 before Michal Sklodowski increased the lead to 3-0. The lead became a comprehensive one when Rafal Krukowski made it 4-0.

It was the perfect start for Alea Iacta Est. It was far from ideal for FC Tpaktop I but they still had plenty of time to turn things around.

Up next was FC Mahou versus Southgate Tourists. This is a fixture that instantly brings back memories of a former final – the 2017 Mallorca Veterans Cup Final. Southgate County produced their best performance in our events with a sensational string of results in the group phase: 2-1 v The Warriors, 2-1 v Crabtree Amblers, 2-0 v C'an Pastilla Vets, 3-0 Ferrioirence and 2-0 v WEEDS Colts. They won Group B with a 100% record to reach the Cup. A 2-1 win against Stilton Rovers in the Cup Semi-Finals followed to set up a final against FC Mahou. FC Mahou won it 4-1 as Southgate County Vets had to settle for runners-up medals. FC Mahou were just too strong on the day as they'd won 7 out of 7 to life the title.

Five years later the two teams met in the group phase of the 2022 Lisbon Veterans with FC Mahou emerging victorious again, 5-0. With history on their side, FC Mahou were considered favourites to make it a hat-trick of victories. The game went with the form book with Steve Sachro making the initial breakthrough. It was Sachro again who doubled the lead before eurofootballfives.com debutant Oliver James scored in his first game to make it 3-0. Cameron Wallis of Southgate Tourists had the final say as he reduced the score to 3-1 and spoiled Pete Armstrong's clean sheet.

The 2024 Prague Veterans Fives was to be decided on a group basis with two groups each containing 7 teams. The teams finishing 1st and 2nd in each group would progress to the Cup competition. The teams finishing 3rd to 6th in each group would progress to the Plate competition. The team finishing 7th in each group would be eliminated.

The final fixture in the opening round of Group A was AC Motxto International versus Mitre FC Vets. AC Motxto International were making their first appearance with us since the 2019 Alicante Tournament before Covid intervened so it was great to see them back. Mitre FC Vets competed at last years' Barcelona Veterans and began with a victory. The English team were off to a fast start with Lewis Ball on target, 1-0.

AC Motxto International soon levelled when Alfonso Martin Ruiz-Orejon made it 1-1. They were then ahead when Miguel Angel Madero Cornejo scored to make it 2-1. It was Mitre FC Vets' turn to equalise as Lewis Ball scored his second of the game. There was to be a winner and the winning strike came from the boot of Pedro Valiente Tejeda. It earned his team all 3 points in a 3-2 victory.
