We were at the 2024 Prague Veterans Tournament Cup Semi-Final stage and from the 14 teams who signed up we were down to the final 4 – already an achievement for those who were still in the hunt for glory. We also had 4 different nations represented in those final four teams. The first Cup Semi-Final would see FC Mahou (Eng) versus World Pinteur (Fra)

FC Mahou need no introduction in these events but we will introduce them nevertheless. They were hunting down a 5 th eurofootballfives.com title which would make them the joint most successful team in our history alongside CIS Committee of Belarus. They were in fine form again today by winning Group A unbeaten with 5 wins out of 6 and a goal difference of 17-3. World Pinteur's record today was excellent but less spectacular in comparison. 3 wins, 2 draws and 1 defeat with a goal difference of 11-7. They were yet to win a title in our events but had come very close losing the 2016 Lisbon Tournament Cup Final on penalties.

The game itself was extremely close and with defences on top. In the end, we had our second 0-0 of the tournament. The first one was FC Mahou's previous game against Alea Iacta Est. The goals had dried up as the tournament got into the tenser stages.

World Pinteur had a hate-love affair with penalty shoot-outs in our events. They must have hated them to begin with as they lost 5 in a row between 2016 and 2023. However, at the 2023 Mallorca Fives they won their Plate Semi-Final and Plate Final on penalties. Maybe they had turned a corner! English teams are not exactly famed for their penalty shootout prowess and FC Mahou had a record of won 1 (Cup Final v FC Dad in Lisbon) and lost 2 (Algarve 2018, Mallorca 2023).

It was FC Mahou to strike first in this one….with Oliver James converting for 1-0 but we were quickly back level with Benoit Botteau equalizing. Goalkeeper Pete Armstrong too the next penalty and scored. From scoring to saving as he kept out Aurelien Ludot's strike and FC Mahou were one kick away from another Cup Final. Up stepped Shaun Gurney – member of the 2011 Prague Masters winning squad – and he made no mistake to fire FC Mahou into the final. It was tough on World Pinteur. They'd pushed such a great team so far but penalties were their undoing again.

So, who would take their place in the Final from the second Semi-Final? The two teams set to do battle were FC Poloboc (Mda) and Aea Iacta Est (Pol). This was a match up between two former champions. It was the 2023 Barcelona Veterans winners versus the 2022 Krakow Trophy Veterans winners. Who would make the vital step forward to another title?

Alea Iacta Est started like a runaway train winning their first four games with a goal difference of 18-1. Since then there was a surprise 2-0 defeat to AC Motxto International and a 0-0 draw with FC Mahou which was a pretty good result. However, no win in the last two games for title hopefuls may have dealt the confidence a little blow. At the other end, FC Poloboc had won 5 games out of 6 with a goal difference of 23-6 and they were on a run of 13 games unbeaten in our events.

With FC Mahou through and these two teams in action it was going to be a tough call to select the tournament winner with 6 titles between them. It was FC Poloboc who struck first though. They had a key weapon in the form of Leonid Cigureanu who had already found the back of the net 9 times today. Correction, 10 times today. 1-0 in these big match ups is always huge as it allows the leaders to dictate play and can play on the counter. Alea Iacta Est had not scored for two games in a row (after 18 in their first 4) and desperately needed to find their goalscoring touch again. This was even more important once Leonid Cigureanu grabbed his second. When he scored his hat-trick goal FC Poloboc were marching into the Cup Final. There was still time for him to grab a fourth and a 13 th strike of the day. His goals were the difference between the two teams and FC Mahou would have to be very wary of his goals in the final match.

It was a tough final few games for Alea Iacta Est but there's certainly no shame in a draw with FC Mahou and a defeat to an on fire FC Poloboc. We hope to see guys again in a couple of months at the 2024 Krakow Trophy!
