The
second semi-final was a big clash in styles as
Bulgaria's Lozenetz City played the Latin American
ex-pats of the Czech based side, Deportivo. As
well as being a clash in styles it proved to be
an epic battle on the pitch that drew the biggest
crowd of the day and had everyone who watched
it totally enthralled.
It
was Deportivo who took the lead when Andres Caballero
scored his fifth goal of the tournament to put
Lozenetz City on the back foot. Deportivo had
only conceded one goal all day so the Bulgarians
would need to pull something special out of the
bag to comeback in this fixture. Deportivo held
their lead into half-time and if they could continue
to defend as well as they had already done so
then they would be in the final.
Lozenetz
City had played in 4 previous tournaments with
2 wins, 1 Runners-Up and 1 Cup Semi-Final finish.
The only way they had been knocked out was on
penalties so Deportivo still had a mammoth task
on their hands despite their lead. Lozenetz City
showed why they were two times champions as they
fought back to equalize through Hristo Kiosev.
Kiosev had a habit of scoring crucial goals as
it was he who scored the winning Golden Goal in
the 2010 Manchester Fives Final.
The
game finished 1-1 and we entered Golden Goal extra
time. Lozenetz City had gone into extra time on
five previous occasions – winning 3 by Golden
Goal and losing 2 on penalties. This was unchartered
territory for Deportivo. As extra time went on
the two teams could not be separated (in more
ways than one!)
The
game went into penalties and Lozenetz City were
hoping to make it third time lucky with penalties
having crashed out of the 2009 Barca Fives Semi-Finals
to French club Luminy Wolves and losing the 2010
Amsterdam Fives Final to Goldsmith Williams in
this manner. They won the toss and decided to
let Deportivo shoot first. It appeared to be a
good move as Jesus Castillo curled it over the
top right angle with Stanislav Ivanov (in goal
for the penalties) not required to make a save.
Tsoni Petrov stepped up to convert the first Lozenetz
penalty and they were looking like favourites
now. Javier Acosta (Deportivo) and Atanas Minev
(Lozenetz) both scored and Lozenetz led 2-1.
Andres
Caballero stepped up for Deportivo's third penalty
knowing he had to score to keep his team in the
tournament. He held his nerve and made it 2-2.
The goal meant that Lozenetz City would have to
win the game. The man with the task of sending
his team to the final was Bojidar Gorchev – the
ball nestled into the back of the net and Lozenetz
City began wild celebrations.
The
day was over for Deportivo, and as with Cheesecake
FC, we are sure there is a tournament victory
for Deportivo in the future.
