We were at the 2016 Mallorca Tournament Cup Semi-Final stage and from the 24 teams who signed up we were down to the final 4 – already an achievement for those who were still in the hunt for glory. The only thing we knew was that there would be a first home winner since 2012 as the strong home challenge had seen off all the travelling teams.

The first Cup Semi-Final would see Peluqueria Mariano versus Brioche. Peluqueria Mariano had reached this stage last year before going out on penalties to ZVC Indoor Gent of Belgium. Brioche also went out to the Belgian team on penalties but in the Quarter-Finals so were in unchartered territory. What it did show, using ZVC Indoor Gent as a marker, was that these teams were evenly matched.

That's how it played out on the pitch with Peluqueria Mariano holding a narrow 1-0 lead at half-time courtesy of a Sergio Gonzalez goal. Brioche FS hit back in the second half through Cheema Molina's 7th goal of the tournament but David Ribero's strike for Peluqueria Mariano put them in command at 2-1. A late defensive mix-up for Peluqueria Mariano gifted Brioche an equalizer through Cheema Molina again and we finished at 2-2. It was penalty shoot-out time and Brioche FS would go first.

1-0, Cheema Molina scored in the bottom left hand corner.

1-1, Mariano Llamas smashes it down the middle to equalize.

2-1, Joau Ripoll fires it into the corner – the third power penalty of the shoot-out.

2-1, David Ribero strikes low to the right corner. Brioche goalkeeper Jose Garcia dives to his left to make the save.

2-1, It is advantage Brioche and if Pau Bujosa (5 goals today) can score his team are in the final but Jose Carlos makes up for his mistake in the game by going the right way and making the save.

2-2, The pressure was now on Sergio Gonzalez who had to score to take it to sudden death and he did just that – striking it sweetly straight down the middle.

2-2, Jose Carlos saves his second penalty in a row and Peluqueria Mariano are in touching distance of the Cup Final.

2-2, Jose Carlos steps up to take it – the hero with 2 penalties saved but he misses his as his opposite number Jose Garcia makes the save – huge drama on pitch B.

3-2, The score moves on with Brioche FS converting to take the lead.

3-3, Can Jose Garcia be the hero again? No he can't as Rafael Ribero hits the top corner.

3-3, Joau Carlos Ensenyat is up next but sees his penalty saved by Jose Carlos – his third save of the shoot-out.

4-3, It's all eyes on Carols Danan who smashes it down the middle to send Peluqueria Mariano into the Cup Final. What a game!

It was a tough exit for Brioche FS who went out on penalties for the second year in a row – we hope they will join us again for another crack at the title in 2017.

So, who would take their place in the Final from the second Semi-Final? The two teams set to do battle were Policia Local against Los Pibes.

Policia Local were bidding to make their second Cup Final – 5 years after they won the tournament. Los Pibes were bidding to make their first on debut. If the first half was characterized as a really close and even contest then this one was a little one-sided in comparison.

There was not a great deal in it during the first half and it was Los Pibes who lead by the odd goal. That goal was scored by Rodrigo Palacio. After half-time Los Pibes eased away from their opponents and Policia Local had no response. Palacio grabbed a second, Matias Damian De Llano hit a thunderous right foot shot which arrowed in at the far post and Agustin Luis Castro added to his tally for the day.

It was game over for Policia Local for today as their search for a second title continues – we hope they will be back for a seventh consecutive year in 2017. Los Pibes had a Cup Final to prepare for.
