JNJ High Wycombe (Eng)

As we entered the final Round of games we knew that the Group C winners would be either JNJ Wuppertal A or JNJ High Wycombe Warriors. The first of those teams were in action now against GBS Reds A. JNJ Wuppertal only had to match the result of JNJ High Wycombe Warriors (goal difference included) in order to take the Group C title.

GBS Reds A needed to win to have any hope of making the Cup – they needed to finish 3rd and hope their points return was enough to be one of the best 3rd placed finishers. They had JNJ Russia B to compete with in Group C and various teams to content with in Groups A and B. Their task was to win and hope the rest would take care of itself. Anything less than a win and their fare would lie in the Plate competition.

JNJ Wuppertal took a 1-0 lead as they had done in every single game thus far and it was Marius Gruner who set them on their way. They were made to work extremely hard for their victory as GBS Reds A pushed them all the way. The Czech team came up against a goalkeeper in extremely good form in the shape of Carsten Schmitz and some finishing that was not quite clinical enough.

The match ended 1-0 and JNJ Wuppertal had done their bit….over to you JNJ High Wycombe. For GBS Reds A it was not the result they wanted but they would contest the Plate competition where they'd enjoyed success before so maybe they were not too disappointed.

The next game was JNJ Belgium Fun Team against Slavoj Consumer. JNJ Belgium Fun Team needed just a point to make the Plate competition but defeat would condemn them to the Wooden Spoon. If Slavoj Consumer could win they could move on to 5 points and earn themselves an easier (in theory anyway) Quarter-Final tie.

Sadly for JNJ Belgium Fun Team it was a familiar story but joyously for Slavoj Consumer they got the chance to enjoy themselves. So far their games had gone 0-1, 1-1, 1-1, 0-1 and all been tight and low on goals. The goals flowed in this fixture though with four goals in each half.

Unfortunately for JNJ Belgium Fun Team all the goals landed in the back of their net. Martin Panzer opened the scoring before Captain Daniel Horak bagged his first of the day. There were goals from Likas Pokorny and Michal Dudon to take us to half-time. In the second period there were goals from Daniel Lemer (x2), a second of the game for Panzer and finally a second of the game for Dudon. The margin of victory was also significant as they rose to 4th position.

With 14 games down and 1 to go, the two remaining teams in Group C knew exactly what to do to achieve their qualification goals. At the top JNJ High Wycombe Warriors had to win and had to win by 4 goals to take the Group C title. Anything less and they would qualify for the Cup in second position.

Their opponents, JNJ Russia B, needed only a draw to finish 3rd on 6 points. A draw on 6 points would see them miss out on the Cup and enter the Plate. A win would see them finish 3rd on 8 points and qualify for the Cup. A defeat would see them slip to 5th place, qualify for the Plate but with a tough Quarter-Final draw.

In a close first half neither of the teams could find a successful route to goal and we turned round all square at 0-0. In the second half there was to be a goal and it was maybe a surprise that it went to JNJ Russia B but, judging by the celebrations from players and their supporters alike, they were well up for this. It looked like JNJ High Wycombe Warriors were going to have a tough task of getting back into this one and that was certainly the case when the Russians were given occasion to celebrate again at 2-0. Both goals were scored by Stanislav Martynov – his first goals of the day and what a game to score them in.

The result ensured that JNJ Russia B would join JNJ Wuppertal A and JNJ High Wycombe Warriors in the Cup competition.
