Group B began with Team Baltic taking on JNJ Serbia. It was the team from Belgrade who struck the opening blow as Aleksander Drobnjak scored the first goal of Group B. It was not long before we saw the second goal of the group from Dragan Dobrota and it was 2-0 to JNJ Serbia.

We were still in the first half and the scoring was not over yet as Drobnjak doubled his tally to make it 3-0. After the break JNJ Serbia extended their advantage to 4-0 as Marko Matanovic opened his personal account for the day. Mercifully for Team Baltic that was the last of the goals.

It was a great start for JNJ Serbia in their challenge for the title. For Team Baltic it was a tough opening game and they would hope every game would not be this tough.

Match 2 saw JNJ Belgium A Team take on JNJ Medical. Belgium A Team were one of three Belgian teams in the tournament and one of two teams from the JNJ Benelux office. Their other team was the “Fun” team so a strong challenge was expected from the A team. JNJ Medical themselves were one component of a triumvirate of teams – this time from the UK.

The early initiative in this game went to the Belgian A Team as Roel Mannaerts scored twice in the opening period to put his team in command. In the second half he went on to complete his hat-trick and make it 3-0 to the Belgians. There was no way back for JNJ Medical as they slipped to opening game defeat.

The final teams in Group B to start their challenge were JNJ Wuppertal B versus local team GBS Reds C. Hailing from Germany, JNJ Wuppertal had a twin pronged attack on the title and this was the second of their teams (their A team were due to play in Group C). For GBS Reds it was their third team and second in action (their A team were also due to play in Group C).

The GBS Reds B team had struggled in Group A and if the naming of the teams A, B and C was in order of ability then GBS Reds C could expect a tough day. As it was they were looking to be a stronger team and were matching their German opponents stride for stride.

As the game went on it was the defences that were on top and the attacking options for either team were held at bay. Half time came and went without troubling the scorers and the second period continued in the same vein. At the full-time whistle the teams could still not be separated and we finished at 0-0….a rare goal-less draw on day of many goals.

Both teams registered their first points. It was a solid start and one to build upon in the ensuing games.
