Round
5 began with what was quite simply the Group B
decider. We had the two teams at the top of the
table meeting head to head. Both teams had already
qualified for the Cup but there was still very
much to play for pride, honour, 3 points, the
Group B title and a theoretically easier Cup Quarter-Final.
Hurting
Berlin were in the box seat as they lead the way
and had a 2 point cushion so a win or a draw would
see them win a eurofootballfives.com group for
the first time 12 points was already their biggest
points haul.
Tinniedad
& Tobacco had won Group A of the 2014 Barcelona
Fives and needed all 3 points here to make it
two wins out of 2 in the group phase of eurofootballfives.com
tournaments. They started off well as they established
a 2-0 lead by the turnaround with Will Boulton
claiming both goals his first of the tournament
and a great time to get them.
Hurting
Berlin were behind for the first time today
how could they respond? Pretty well in terms of
performance but they could make no impression
on the scoreline as the Tinniedad & Tobacco
defence held firm. At the other end Jon McKinley
extended the lead to 3-0 and in tennis parlance
it was game, set and match.
Both
teams had been superb this morning and would go
into the Cup competition congratulations to
Tinnidad & Tobacco for winning the group.
Fail
Madrid would collect their 3-0 walkover win
against Scandittack FC although it wouldn't
effect anything in terms of the league placings
but the table did look a little more attractive
from a Fail Madrid perspective.
Into
Game 15 of Group B and there was still Rayford
Athletic versus Southgate County to decide how
the table would look in the annals of history.
This wasn't just an academic fixture as there
was an awful lot riding on it. A draw or a win
for Rayford Athletic would see them qualify for
the Cup with Southgate County progressing to the
afternoon Plate competition. A Southgate County
victory would see the reverse outcome. This was
a battle for third place.
It
was a pretty close first half for the most-part
but there was a horror moment for Rayford Athletic
with an own goal for Ross Bennett as Aaron Allibon
in goal saw the ball agonisingly roll under his
foot to give Southgate County a goal and also
a huge psychological advantage. Rayford Athletic
were visibly disillusioned by the incident and
all helped Southgate County establish a 3-1 lead
at half-time. Daniel Key scored for Rayford Athletic
at the right end with Patrick Ball and Damien
OBrien also scoring for Southgate County.
Rayford
Athletic had a tough task going into the final
half of football in Group B they needed to score
two unanswered goals. It was an uphill task and
that uphill task became a mountain to climb when
Southgate County extended their lead to 4-1 through
Neil Spackman.
Southgate
County had done enough though to qualify for the
Cup, Rayford Athletic would be playing Plate football
this afternoon.
