After
58 games of football we came down to the most
important of them all. Game 59 – The 2015 Berlin
Fives Cup Final.
The
two teams set to do battle for the honour and
glory of victory were Pink Flamingos A (England)
versus Hurting Berlin (Ireland). England were
looking for their first winners of the 2015 eurofootballfives.com
season after wins for Slovakia, Hungary, Portugal
and Ireland so far this year. That Irish win was
by Saipan FC at the 2015 Mallorca Tournament –
a first ever eurofootballfives.com Cup winner
representing the Emerald Isle. Could Hurting Berlin
make it 2 Irish wins in 8 days after 9 years of
waiting?
Pink
Flamingos A were massively impressive on debut
and would be narrow favourites going into the
game. They had stormed into the Final with 7 wins
on the bounce, 21 goals scored and only five goals
conceded in the whole tournament. Hurting Berlin
were not far off that record with 6 wins, 1 defeat,
20 goals scored and just 4 conceded. Hurting Berlin
had already accounted for the Pink Flamingos B
team in the Quarter-Finals and would need to make
that a double-scalp to lift the coveted trophy
by beating the A team too.
Hurting
Berlin were appearing in their second eurofootballfives.com
Cup Final having reached this stage at the 2012
Valencia Fives. On that occasion it was one game
too far as they succumbed 4-0 to Hungary's FC
Miracle. This was a much more even contest than
that final 3 years ago. It was a committed performance
from both teams with both teams trying their best
to break the deadlock but defences were on top.
Lorcan Bannon had a header go close for Hurting
Berlin whilst at the other end it looked like
opening up for James Westlake of Pink Flamingos
A before a Ross Nicholson challenge came to the
rescue. We reached half-time at 0-0.
In
the second half Pink Flamingos A were getting
closer as Hurting Berlin required a last ditch
tackle from Emmet Egan to keep things level. Pink
Flamingos then had a penalty shout that was waved
away whilst at the other end Pink Flamingos goalkeeper
Elliott Bartram looked like he might have handled
the ball outside the area – nothing given.
As
we entered the last quarter of the game the deadlock
was broken as James Westlake's fourth goal of
the tournament gave Pink Flamingos A a crucial
lead. It was not the end for Hurting Berlin as
they pressed for an equalizer. The looked like
they might get it when Lorcan Bannon latched on
to a sharp chance and the ball rebounded back
off the crossbar. Pink Flamingos A survived that
scare and held on to their 1-0 lead as the referee
blew for full-time.
We
offer our consolations to Hurting Berlin who were
absolutely superb and a top quality side. They
could not have gone much closer to victory.
Our
congratulations go to Pink Flamingos A – 2015
Berlin Fives Champions! Who could deny
them after 8 wins out of 8 games. A great win
and may you enjoy your success!
Thank
you to all the teams who competed. We hope to
see you all again at a tournament very soon.
