The 2022 Mallorca Fives was our 13th tournament on the sunshine island of Mallorca. We kicked off on the 14th May on another glorious day at this stunning destination – 18 teams assembled from 7 proud nations with Ecuador, England, France, Ireland, Poland, Switzerland and Spain all represented. The sun was shining, the teams were ready (some more than others with hangovers fresh)…the big kick-off was upon us.

The first two challengers to get us underway in Group A on Pitch A this year would be AFC Blue Boys 2 (Pol) versus Lindfield FC A (Eng). The two teams produced a hotly contested encounter that provided a quality game with plenty of goals and excitement for those watching on.

It was first blood to Poland as Marcin Zaluga opened the Group A scoring in the first half. It was a lead they would maintain until the break. In the second half, Lindfield FC A struck back thanks to a Stuart Brown goal. The English side were not level for long though. Michal Cedrowski restored the lead for AFC Blue Boys 1 but again Lindfield FC showed their ability to bounce back. It was Stuart Brown with his second equaliser of the game as he earned his team a share of the points.

Final score 2-2 and if all the games were as thrilling as this one we'd have a great day ahead of us.

The first phase of the tournament would be decided on a group basis with three groups of 6 teams in each group. The teams finishing 1st and 2nd in each group would progress to the Cup competition along with the best two third placed finishers. The other 3rd placed team and those finishing 4th and 5th in each group along with the best 6th placed team would progress to the Plate competition. Both the Cup and Plate would be played as a knock-out with Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Final. The final two 6th placed teams would contest a wooden spoon match.

Group A continued with Las Zacaranas of France versus Bayern Badonde of England. The English team were on debut in our tournaments and they got off to the perfect start when George Rod put them ahead. That joy was short-lived though with Adrien Maurel putting Las Zacaranas level at 1-1. The French team then edged ahead with an Anicet Owona goal. It got even better for Las Zacaranas as a second from Adrien Maurel meant they lead 3-1 at half-time.

In the second half, Las Zacaranas held their opponents at arm's length in scoring terms at leasr. Bayern Badonde were unable to reduce arrears and in fact they conceded a further goal as Anicet Owona scored his second of the game. Full-time, 4-1.

The final two teams in Group A were Urbansport ‘22 of Spain and Squirrel Squad FC of England.

Urbansport ‘22 (Spa) w ere compet ing for the fourth time at our Mallorca tournaments. They have previously made three impressive appearances in 2018 & 2019 competing as Bar Maruru. Their crowning achievement came at the September 2018 edition of the tournament where they drew their opening game (1-1 v Urbansport – another team with the same name) but quickly returned to winning ways as 4 consecutive wins saw them win Group with 13 points out of a possible 15. In the Cup Quarter Finals they saw off Yac Club Reserves 4-0 before getting their revenge on Urbansport in the Semi-Finals (2-1). They set up their first Cup Final and won it in style, 5-0 versus Ecuador 100%.

This therefore represented a daunting start for Squirrel Squad FC who were on debut in our events. Urbansport '22 were one of the pre-tournament favourites and they looked like they were living up to that billing. They flew out of the traps with a hat-trick from Johiner Vasquez and a goal from Carlos Matovelle. The English team found themselves 4-0 down at half-time.

In the second half further goals from Aarron Erazo (x2) extended the lead to 6-0 as Urbansport '22 took top spot in Group A.
