We were at the 2022 Mallorca Fives Cup Semi-Final stage and from 18 teams who started the day we were down to the final 4. Before the Quarter-Finals we had 5 nationalities vying for glory – this was now 4 with Switzerland, England, Ecuador and Ireland still harbouring hopes of success!

Up first was Luca Toni FC of Switzerland versus Lindfield FC A of England. Luca Toni FC came into the game with 5 wins out of 6, Lindfield FC had 3 wins out of 6 but both were unbeaten. These were the top scoring teams in the tournament with 23 goals and 24 goals respectively. We didn't quite know what to expect from this game but a 0-0 looked unlikely!

Luca Toni FC seemed to have invoked some kind of curse at the semi-final stage of our events. In 3 previous tournament appearances they had left us at the semi-final stage on every occasion even when seemingly looking like they would be champions as was the case at the 2017 Krakow Trophy and the 2019 Amsterdam Fives. Could they break the curse here?

Things looked bright when Carlos Gazapo gave them an early lead. That lead did not last long though as Jamie Wilkes equalized for Lindfield FC A. The English game then turned the game on its head to move 2-1 ahead thanks to Ruairi Farrell. 2-1 became 3-1 when Stuart Brown scored which, in turn, became 4-1 when Dan Jacques opened his personal account of the day. What started so brightly for Luca Toni FC had turned into a nightmare.

Lindfield FC A had broken the back of this game in that opening period and just needed to see it through in the second half. They did more than that as further goals from Ruairi Farrell and Stuart Brown ensured that Lindfield FC A would power through to the Cup Final.

Had the Luca Toni FC SF curse struck again? Curse or no curse there can be no doubt that the best team in this particular match reached the Cup Final.

So, who would take their place in the Final from the second Semi-Final? The two teams set to do battle were Ecuador 100% against Alabama Hotpockets?

The Alabama Hotpockets were looking to reach their first Cup Final since the 2015 Barcelona Fives. Back then they won Group C with 10 points. In the Cup, they defeated Freshers FC (2-1) and then drew with Elcombe Old Boys 1-1. They won 3-2 on penalties against the 2016 Barcelona champions. The Alabama Hotpockets just ran out of steam against Club Esportiu Llefia when they went down 5-0 in the Cup Final.

They reached this stage today with 10 points in Group C again but finished behind Ecuador 100% and when they met earlier today the Ecuador team emerged victorious, 2-0. The Alabama Hotpockets would have a tough task on their hands trying to prevent their opponents reaching a third successive final but they acquitted themselves well in the first half. As well as they played they could not prevent trailing at the break. Jose was the man with the goal to separate the two teams.

Ecuador 100% had only conceded two goals all day so Alabama Hotpockets would have to be at their best going forward without falling further behind at the back. No mean feat and a task that was ultimately beyond them. When Jose scored a second the writing was on the wall. He went on to complete a hat-trick before Jhon put a couple of nails in the coffin.

The tournament was over for Alabama Hotpockets but they had been superb – they obviously came to win the title but it was not to be.
