The Veterans Group entered it's climactic stages with all teams having just one more group game to go. First up was Intermore FC versus Dickie Dogs. The two teams had struggled today in terms of points but had come close in a few games where the performances did not yield the reward for efforts. Could they end on a high?

Interstingly the two teams had met before in the 2012 Budapest Fives where Dickie Dogs and Intermore FC played in the same group and earned a 1-1 draw. In this game the first blow was struck by Ian Hall and when Mark Bee made it 2-0 it looked like the Dickie Dogs would return home with a victory under their belts.

Intermore FC had other ideas though as Gerry Black made it 2-1. The Irish had threatened comebacks earlier in the day that did not quite come off….this time it did as Dee Maguire equalized for 2-2. That's how it finished and both teams claimed a point. The two teams had also proved they could not be separated in Budapest and could not be separated in Lisbon.

When Funsport B and St Paul's College Old Boys met there was a chance to secure 2nd place in the table. Funsport B only needed a draw and St Paul's College Old Boys needed a win to achieve this goal.

There was little pressure on the teams as both were qualified and the likelihood was both would meet in the Semi-Finals regardless of this result….bar any surprise in the Sao Marcos v Valejas A.C game to follow.

So, second was up for grabs as was the psychological advantage going into those Semi-Finals. Rui Lopez and Francisco scored for Funsport B in the first half as did Andrew Sprosen for the English.

In the second half, Funsport B extended their lead from 2-1 to 3-1 (through Hugo Condiego) and the three points were assured. It meant Funsport B were level on points with Sao Marcos – temporarily at least. They needed Sao Marcos to lose by 11 goals to win the group…

….don't think that was ever going to happen. Sao Marcos may well lose their final game versus Valejas A.C but by 11 goals was unthinkable. Once again we had what was effectively a dress rehearsal for the Veterans Semi-Finals as 1 st played 4 th . A point for Valejas A.C would change that and earn them a theoretically easier game against Funsport B and leave St Paul's College Old Boys to face Sao Marcos in the Semi-Finals.

Any suggestion of the above was quickly put to bed as Sao Marcos scored three early goals and a fourth later on to secure a 4-0 win, the maximum 15 points available and take the league victory. Goals from Joaquim Rijo (2), Helder Adega and Helder Saraiva ensured they would go into the knock-out phase as favourites.
