The 2013 Lisbon Tournament is a first for two reasons. The first being our first tournament in the Portuguese capital and the second being our first ever Veterans tournament. Six teams line up for the honour of being our first Veterans Champions in Europe – 3 from Portugal, 2 from England and 1 from Lisbon.

.

To kick us off we had Ireland's Intermore FC versus St Paul's College Old Boys of England. The latter were on debut but we can tell you a little bit about our Irish friends – They make their fourth appearance in our tournaments following a debut in Krakow 2010. They finished second in their group before bowing out at the quarter-final stage to eventual runners-up, Pimp My Side. Twelve months on in Barcelona they went all the way to the Plate Final where they were unlucky to finish runners-up, 1-0, in a very tight match against Bristol Bridge. Last time out it was the Plate Quarter-Finals they reached in the Budapest Fives before bowing out to a strong Hungarian team – Stanis Mates.

In all those tournaments they advised they are yet to win their opening game. Good news for St Paul's College Old Boys who took full advantage opening up a 3-1 lead thanks to goals from Andrew Sprosen (v quickly after kick-off), Paul Rodgers and Sprosen again. A Paddy Ryan goal for Intermore FC kept them in the hunt. The comeback was well and truly on when Paul Reid made it 3-2. Lewis Howard dampened Irish spirits when he made it 4-2. A second Paddy Ryan goal for 4-3 meant spirits were lifted but time was against them. The English team took all 3 points.

Match 2 saw Dickie Dogs take on debutants Sao Marcos. We can't tell you much about Sao Marcos until we see them in action but Dickie Dogs were making a return to action after an impressive debut in the 2010 Valencia Fives. In Valencia they claimed the Group C title with an undefeated record of 3 wins and 1 draw. They then came undone against tournament runners-up, Galacticos, in the Cup Quarter-Finals. In the 2012 Budapest Fives they also said farewell at the Quarter-Finals stage but in the Plate when they lost out to eventual winners, Csabagyongye of Hungary.

In a keenly contested first half there was only one goal to separate the teams at the break and it came from Joaquim Rijo. At 1-0 the game was still on a knife edge but it was taken away from the Dickie Dogs as strikes from Marcolino David, Helder Adega and Joaquim Rijo again made the full-time result 4-0.

The final two teams to get underway in the Veteran's category were Funsport B and Valejas A.C. Both from Lisbon. Both on debut.

As with Dickie Dogs v Sao Marcos, it was a close first half and the teams turned round at the break with the scorers untroubled, all level at 0-0. This had all the hallmarks of a game where one goal would win it and so it proved as Hugo Condiego struck home the winner.

They joined St Paul's College Old Boys and Sao Marcos as Round 1 winners. For the other 3 teams….still plenty of time in the group.
