The
final game of the group phase would be New Wave
Funk versus AC Mazi 1996. These two teams had
occupied the top two spaces at the end of Round
1, 2, 3 and 4. Crucially, would they be there
at the end of Round 5?
AC
Mazi 1996 needed just 1 point to secure the Group
D win but they would no doubt crave the win to
do it in style with a 100% record. If they lost
they were still through to the Cup due to their
hugely impressive goal difference – but New Wave
Funk could potentially finish above them for the
title win.
At
this stage, New Wave Funk were probably not thinking
about the group win but just thinking about qualifying.
A defeat or draw would see them finish in third
position and qualify for the Plate. The equation
for them was simple – win and qualify in second
place on goal difference. If they won by 6 they
would take the Group D victory although highly
unlikely against an AC Mazi team who had conceded
only 1 goal all day so far.
After
the early exchanges both teams were still in it.
Gjeloshi Etmond (AC Mazi) and Nick Moore (New
Wave Funk) goals cancelling each other out. After
that, AC Mazi 1996 eased away from their opponents.
Thanasaj Laerto made it 2-1, then 3-1. Marios
Ntatis added a fourth before Thanasaj Laerto's
hat-trick goal made it 5-1.
Captain
Barney Wilde had the final word to make it 5-2
but the goal was only to be a mere consolation.
There was no shame in losing to such illustrious
opposition and it had been a good morning's work
overall for New Wave Funk. Group D and the group
phase was now complete.
