AC Mazi 1996 (Gre)

The Black Sheep team today were a hybrid of The Black Sheep (5 players) and Elcombe Old Boys (3 players) as two under strength teams (in terms of numbers) combined in order to avoid missing out on the day's festivities.

This was some hybrid as it combined the 2012 title winning team with members of the 2016 title winning team. It therefore showed the strength of the group overall that this team were currently only in fourth position after 3 games played. The next opponents for Black Sheep would be Wonder Vision.

The Wonder Vision team may well have recognized some of the players in the Black Sheep ranks as Wonder Vision met Elcombe Old Boys at the start of Group D in last year's 2017 Barcelona Fives. On that occasion, the teams played out a 0-0 draw.

This game proved just as close but we were to get a goal this time round – just the one though. It was Black Sheep who scored it as Jannik Friis scored for the second game running to give his team all 3 points.

It was disappointment for Wonder Vision as they remained at the foot of the table.

The next game in Group D was Los Portugalitos versus New Wave Funk. This promised to be quite some game.

Los Portugalitos had lost their opening game to AC Mazi 1996 but since collected two wins in a row. They kicked off in third position just three points behind the two leaders at the top. One of those leaders was New Wave Funk.

New Wave Funk had made an incredible debut so far with 3 wins out of 3 – this could well be their biggest test yet. If they could pass the test and secure victory then they would qualify for the Cup with a game to spare. A draw would put them very close but defeat would leave them with work to do. New Wave Funk had AC Mazi 1996 to come in Round 5 so we are sure they would want to wrap up their place in the Cup here and now.

From the Los Portugalitos perspective, they knew a win here and a (theoretically) easier final game would make them well placed to qualify for the Cup themselves. On the field of play there was very little to choose between the two teams. All of Los Portugalitos's game had finished 2-0 so far but just the one goal was needed to settle this game. Honorato Marques was the man to score it and earn all three points for Portugal.

New Wave Funk remained in second place but their place in the Cup was now under threat.

You had to feel for the Rain Dragons – they had played 3 and lost 3. They were yet to score and the rain was pouring down. They strode out to the middle for their fourth group game and who did they see? AC Mazi 1996.

AC Mazi 1996 were the antithesis of the Rain Dragons own performance. The Greek team had played 3, won 3, scored 12 goals and conceded just 1. It would need a monumental effort from the Rain Dragons to get on the board from this game.

AC Mazi 1996 were not league leaders for nothing and they showed their quality when they knocked off a comfortable 5-0 win. Charalambos Pelekis scored the first goal before two goals from Thanasaj Laerto saw them comfortable at 3-0. Ilias Vergos made it 4-0 before Pantelis Piperidis completed the routing victory, 5-0.

AC Mazi 1996 looked like the team to beat for today's title. They now had a 3 point lead at the top of Group D.
