The
2013 Algarve Open Plate Final was to be contested
by United Colours of Benetton (Holland) and Water
Boy (Portugal).
The
two teams had met in the final game of Group and
the game had ended in stalemate, 0-0.
This
game started at a much different pace and an early
goal certainly helped the game. Marcus Gravin
chose the perfect moment to score his first goal
of the day and whatever happened afterwards he
can claim to have scored a goal in a European
Final. The goal put United Colours of Benetton
ahead and with 3 successive clean sheets they
were in pole position for the Plate title.
That
run would end though as Water Boy hit back quickly.
The Portuguese were goal shy earlier in the day
but know their attacking play was clicking into
top gear as Mario Sebastiao equalized for the
local team. Water Boy had turned around a deficit
in the Semi-Final and had neutralized a deficit
in the Plate Final.
They
weren't finished there though as they completed
the comeback with Joao Mendonca scoring his second
goal of the tournament and were ahead 2-1. We
were still in the first half but not for long
as the referee blew for half-time.
Could
United Colours of Benetton muster one last effort
to prevent them picking up Runners-Up medals in
the presentation and exchanging them for Winners
medals. One goal is all they needed to take into
extra time but that one goal proved elusive and
Water Boy wrapped up the victory.
Our
congratulations go to Water Boy on a fine performance.
They put a poor start behind them to go five games
unbeaten when it really mattered to seal glory.
Our condolences go to United Colours of Benetton
who were once again a great asset to this eurofootballfives.com
tournament and they would collect medals for their
efforts.
