Let Us Win or Elsie (Eng)

We began Round 5 with an enthralling contest in prospect. The joint league leaders would come face-to-face to do battle as CFC met FC Radbroke. Both teams would hope that their 10 points amassed so far would ensure qualification as one of the two best 3rd placed teams at the very least but they could put qualification beyond all doubt with a win and also claim the Group A title. A draw would also seal qualification as both teams would finish on 11 points and guarantee a top two finish. In this scenario, CFC would win the group on goal difference.

There was a sub-plot here with two impressive records coming head-to-head, Clement Benard with 4 consecutive clean sheets and Mike Brandon scoring in 4 consecutive games. At least one of those records would go.

Half-time came and went and we were locked at 0-0. At full-time it remained 0-0 and Clement Benard had finished Group A without conceding. It was the second time this year after Shahs of Sunset's Samir Benyounes also achieved 5 consecutive clean sheets in the Group phase in the Budapest Fives.

Both teams had done enough to qualify for the Cup – well done to both.

Next up was Sergio Cristina versus West Central FC. It was 3rd placed versus 4th place. Neither side could catch the top two but if the teams could pull out a victory they stood every chance of qualifying as one of the best two third placed teams but it was not guaranteed. Anything less and Plate football awaited in the afternoon knockout phase.

The teams were locked at 0-0 for much of the first half before a pivotal period of play arrived. Rajan Johal hit the bar for West Central FC and they could so easily have been ahead. However, they were shortly behind as Sergio Cristina nipped into the lead just before the break before the man they call “Freddy” scored the game's decisive goal.

The 1-0 victory earned Sergio Cristina 3rd position and their haul of 10 points proved enough for them to make the Cup competition. West Central FC would finish 4th and take their position in the Plate.

The final game of Group A was Hangover 96 against Let Us Win or Elsie. Hangover 96 had just put in their best performance of the day and had scored the best goal in the group but had yet to register points on the board in Group A – there would be no better time than now. Let Us Win or Elsie had started well and performed well in their opening 2-3 games but form had tailed off possibly with the lack of reward for their efforts but they could finish Group A on a high.

There was plenty to play for too – the game was effectively a shoot-out for Plate qualification. A win for either would ensure 5th place, a draw would guarantee qualification for Let Us Win or Elsie and leave Hangover 96 to wait to see if they were the best 6th placed team. Defeat for either would mean 6th place and awaiting that same fate.

Hangover 96 continued their form from the last game and opened the scoring through George Smith. His goal looked like winning it for much of the match but up popped Joe Croft towards the end to equalise and make it 1-1. Let Us Win or Elsie began and finished Group A with a 1-1 draw that saw them finish 5th and seal Plate qualification.

Hangover 96 whilst they couldn't deliver all 3 points still managed to grab their first points of the day. Group B and Group C results meant they were the best of the 6th placed teams and would also qualify for the Plate.
