Moles Salah A (Eng)

Before the final two fixtures on the field let's deal with the final walkover which was Moles Salah A versus BP Hatters. The three points put Moles Salah A joint fourth on 4 points but fifth on goal difference. It meant their fate lied at the feet of others. They would need a Mitre FC B defeat by 5 goals or more to make it through.

As we entered the fifth round of games each match was becoming progressively more important. Games were running out and points were becoming increasingly valuable. First up was The Shirker's Rest against Mitre FC B. The Shirker's Rest were guaranteed a place in the Plate as they currently occupied third position. They still had hopes of a place in the Cup if they won and Foot 130 B combined with a swing in goal difference. The Shirker's Rest were +3 compared to Foot 130 B's +11 so it was an outside chance…..but still a chance.

For Mitre FC B a draw or better would be enough to secure a place in the Plate. They could even afford a defeat as long as they were not trounced by 5 goals or more. If Mitre FC B could climb above their opponents with a 3 goal win to finish third and, in the process, secure a theoretically easier Plate Semi-Final tie against the fourth placed team in Group A. It was The Shirker's Rest who made the initial breakthrough though. Chris Breen scored in the first two rounds and he was back amongst the goals to put The Shirker's Rest 1-0 up. Luke Burnett was another man in the goals for The Shirker's Rest and his third of the tournament made it 2-0. It put the game beyond reach of Mitre FC B as Rich Mason and his defence kept a clean sheet.

The result effectively secured safe passage for both of these teams into the Plate knock-out phase and they were now 2 games away from potential glory.

Game 15 of Group B was the final game of the group and it was a head-to-head clash to see who would win the table. Before kick-off it was Mardi Southgate Gras who had a two-point lead so they “just” needed to avoid defeat to go into the Cup Semi-Finals as group winners. A win for Foot 130 B would see them climb above their opponents, take the group win and avoid playing Foot 130 A in the Semis.

Both teams were unbeaten so far with Mardi Southgate Gras boasting a 100% record. This was the first time Southgate County had been 4 from 4 since the 2017 Mallorca Veterans Tournament when they won their group with a maximum 15 points en route to the Cup Final. It was a feat they were sadly unable to repeat in Prague.

Foot 130 B came flying out of the traps as Natan Decarriere kept up his remarkable record of scoring in every game. Foot 130 B had shared the goals around with all outfield players scoring. Hippolyte de Fontenay added to his tally to make it 2-0 to Foot 130 B. His second of the game and third of the tournament made it 3-0.

There was a brief respite for Mardi Southgate Gras as Jack Reed scored for the second game running to reduce arrears to 3-1. Foot 130 B extended their lead to 4-1 not so long after when Dmitri Chendjou scored his second of the day. It was a resounding victory for Foot 130 B and it meant both their squads had qualified for the Cup. Not only that, they had both qualified as group winners.

For Southgate County, it was defeat but that should not take away from a great group performance. Their best group phase since that Mallorca Veterans tournament in 2017 and their best performance in a group phase in the Open Age section since the 2015 Berlin Fives (quite appropriate as the team had visited Berlin before arriving in Prague on the eve of the tournament).
