3
rounds completed with 4 to go. The Shirker's Rest
were making their 14 th appearance in our events
and it all started for them 13 years ago at the
2011 Prague Masters. A trip down memory lane reveals
they began with a 1-1 draw against AC Lesk before
a 2-0 loss to Deportivo. There were subsequent
defeats to It's Back (3-1), GBS Reds (1-0) and
Team Also Ran (5-0) as they finished at the foot
of Group A. A 5-1 defeat in the Plate Quarter-Finals
followed. Since that inauspicious start (at least
in terms of results), The Shirker's Rest stable
of teams have flourished and earned quite a bit
of silverware – particularly in recent years.
Today, they were sitting pretty in third position
with a genuine crack at the Cup qualification
places. They would have one of their sternest
tests so far today with a match against Foot 130
B.
Foot
130 B were currently top of the table. If the
French could secure victory here they would ensure
Cup qualification with a game to spare as it would
mean The Shirker's Rest could no longer catch
them. It was the French who broke the deadlock
with Natan Decarriere scoring for the third game
in a row. The Shirker's Rest were back level though
when Ben McNamee made it 1-1. Maxime Remesy joined
his team-mate in scoring for the third successive
game as Foot 130 B went 2-1 up. Ben McNamee was
a thorn in the French side as he equalized for
a second time, 2-2.
Foot
130 B were ahead for the third time in the game
but with the aid of an own goal. How costly could
that goal prove to be for The Shirker's Rest?
Still, Foot 130 B were unable to shake off The
Shirker's Rest. Luke Burnett proved match-winner
in Round 2 but here in Round 4 he was match saviour
as he scored The Shirker's Rest's third equalizer
of the game. That was the end of the scoring and
a great 3-3 draw. Arguably this was the game of
Group B to date – honours even in a match neither
team deserved to lose.
Game
11 was due to be Mitre FC B versus BP Hatters
so Mitre FC B could put their feet up and collect
the 3 points from their 3-0 walkover. It saw
them into 4 th position in the revised table.
Game
12 of Group B was the last match before the final
set of fixtures. It was Mardi Southgate Gras versus
Moles Salah A. Foot 130 B had missed out on the
chance to move 3 points ahead of Southgate with
a draw against The Shirker's Rest but they still
had a point lead at the top. Mardi Southgate Gras
could leapfrog the French team if they could take
victory over Moles Salah A.
Moles
Salah A were desperate for the points themselves.
As Mitre FC B collected their walkover they moved
3 points ahead of Moles Salah in the battle for
fourth place and the last Plate qualification
place.
The
game started with Mardi Southgate Gras in dominant
form. Jack Reed opened the scoring, giving them
a 1-0 lead. The momentum continued as Neil Spackman
doubled their advantage, making it 2-0. Luke Kelly
further extended the lead to 3-0, showcasing his
scoring prowess.
Moles
Salah A began to mount a comeback with Kesar Hunjan
finding the back of the net, reducing the deficit
to 3-1. Finn O Hickey then scored, making it 3-2
and marking his third goal of the day. However,
Mardi Southgate Gras sealed the game when Luke
Kelly netted his second goal of the match and
sixth of the day, concluding the match with a
final score of 4-2. This victory propelled Mardi
Southgate Gras to the top of Group B, a testament
to their strong performance throughout the game
and tournament so far.
