We began Round 5 with a lot to decide. There was only 2 points separating second to fifth positions with any of them having a chance to reach the Cup. Ecuador 100% were already there but there was still 1 (possibly 2) places still up for grabs.

The first two teams to state their case were Sheffield Thursday and Deportivo Dooradoyle. Sheffield Thursday needed a victory and other results to go their way but it was always going to be tough for them. Deportivo Dooradoyle on the other hand knew a win would virtually assure safe passage to the Cup.

Sheffield Thursday must have been wondering how they were down in 5 th – with a draw, a win and two narrow defeats (against former winners on our circuit) they had played well today and, on another day, could easily be sat in second or third position if some big moments has gone their way. Momentum is a big thing in these tournaments and that can be a positive or negative thing depending on if results were going for you or against.

At the moment they were going against Sheffield Thursday. Deportivo Dooradoyle had been in good form themselves today. Patrick O Brien and Kevin Shine were both on target for the Irish team as they secured their third win of the tournament. It gave them a haul of 9 points and they were realistically in the Cup.

Next up was W London versus Wentworth Arms Royals. There was a lot at stake for W London but they needed to win this game. This would put them on 9 points which could see them qualify for the Cup in second or third but could see them qualify for the Plate in third or fourth (depending on goal difference and if they were one of the top two third placed teams). Their goal difference currently worked against them so they were looking at winning and winning big.

Wentworth Arms Royals had their own ambitions though. Due to goal difference they would probably finish in sixth place but a haul of 4 points would almost certainly see them as the best 6th placed team and reach the Plate. A draw would make that harder and a defeat would almost certainly see elimination.

With the game underway it was Jorge Legido who drew first blood as the Royals forged ahead. W London were level through Darius Plummer and then went ahead through Maxime Roche. It was a vital comeback that would keep their title hopes alive. It was a deadly blow to Wentworth Arms Royals who would be eliminated due to results in other groups.

The final thing to wrap up Group A was Ecuador 100% versus The Yol. Ecuador 100% were already through but they were bidding to wrap up their second perfect Group phase. In 2022, they won 5 out of 5 and could repeat the feat here with another three points.

The Yol were one of three teams locked together on 6 points at the start of Round 5. They were level with W London and Deportivo Dooradoyle who had both won their games. The Yol had the hardest task of all to try and match them.

What followed was a fantastic performance from The Yol which ultimately counted for nothing. Many might say it was the best performance of the group phase to hold the 3-times defending champions to a 0-0 draw. This was particularly impressive when you consider that The Yol only had 5 players so had been unable to rest legs or rotate on a hot summer's day. In contrast, Ecuador 100% had a full 10-man squad.

The draw meant that The Yol would finish with 4 points and qualify for the Plate competition. If they could keep up this level of performance they would arguably be one of the favourites to secure the Plate title.
