The 2024 Mallorca Fives was our 15 th tournament date on the sunshine island of Mallorca. When we kicked off on the 11 th May on another glorious day at this stunning destination – 18 teams assembled from 7 proud nations with Australia, Ecuador, England, Ireland, Poland, Portugal and Spain all represented. The sun was shining, the teams were ready (some more than others with hangovers fresh)…the big kick-off was upon us.

The first two challengers to get us underway in Group A on Pitch A this year would be Sheffield Thursday versus Wentworth Arm Royals. The two teams produced a hotly contested encounter that provided a quality game, goals to enjoy and excitement for those watching on.

Sheffield Thursday were on debut so this was our first chance to see them in action. They played well but were unable to avoid falling behind as Matt Walton gave the Royals a 1-0 lead. The lead would not last though as Sheffield Thursday were back on terms to make it 1-1. Joe Morris was the man with the goal and the honour of going into the history books as the scorer of their first goal in Europe.

Final score 1-1 and it was a solid start for both teams.

The first phase of the tournament would be decided on a group basis with three groups of 6 teams in each group. The teams finishing 1st and 2nd in each group would progress to the Cup competition along with the best two third placed finishers. The other 3rd placed team and those finishing 4th and 5th in each group along with the best 6th placed team would progress to the Plate competition. Both the Cup and Plate would be played as a knock-out with Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Final. The final two 6 th placed teams would be eliminated.

Group A continued with Deportivo Dooradoyle of Ireland versus The Yol of England. Both teams had previous eurofootballfives.com experience which we will preview in more detail as we progress with this report. It was The Yol who got off to the best start with Joe Holmes putting the English side ahead.

Deportivo Dooradoyle were soon into their stride with Ed O'Dwyer scoring their first goal of the tournament. They turned the game on its head when Pat O Brien put them 2-1 up. Kevin Shine extended that lead to 3-1 and, with it, the Irish team secured the win and all 3 points.

The final two teams in Group A were W London of England and Ecuador 100% of Ecuador.

The 2023 Mallorca Fives tournament saw Ecaudor 100% complete a historic hat-trick of titles. They got off to a slow start losing 1-0 to Polonia Limerick but soon hit their stride with a 5-0 win over Relentless FC, a 6-3 win over Urbansport and a 6-2 win over World Pinteur. They won the group by 2 points and headed into a Cup semi-final against Santander FC who they swept aside 4-1. The Cup Final was a repeat against Polonia Limerick and the Ecuadorians got their revenge over the Polish team as a 4-0 victory saw them collect the title once again.

If there was any lessons for W London to learn from that synopsis it was to try and catch Ecuador 100% early. However, Ecuador 100% also seemed to learn from last year and they came flying out of the traps. Although Maxime Roche and Malek Mansour both found the back of the net for W London they were unable to stop Ecuador 100% scoring at the other end.

Ecuador 100% were full of goals and were ruthless in racking up the score. Jose Mosqueira and Goxi Gonzalez were the main men to do the damage with both scoring hat-tricks. In fact, they scored 4 each as they inflicted heavy damage on the W London defence. Final score, 8-2.
